When it comes to Australian post apocalyptic movies about cars, there’s usually only one name that immediately springs to mind: Mad Max. Writer/director David Michod would like to change that.
The Animal Kingdom helmer may not have a young leather-bound Mel Gibson or a giant man dressed in BDSM gear calling himself The Humungus, nor is the car that is the macguffin of The Rover particularly memorable. But what it does have is a desperate Guy Pearce threatening a wild Robert Pattinson with some serious violence if he doesn’t help track down this very unremarkable car. And it looks like it could be amazing.
The Rover is set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society. The rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Guy Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind a wounded Rey (Robert Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him.
The Rover also stars Scoot McNairy, Susan Prior, Gillian Jones, Anthony Hayes and David Field, will have a limited opening on June 20, 2014.
