It’s official! After some earlier rumours first got the internet all excited, it was officially confirmed this weekend past that Donald Glover will in fact be playing a young version of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming still untitled Han Solo spinoff movie. The news was revealed by StarWars.com itself with the following statement:
Hello, what have we here?
Lucasfilm announced today that Donald Glover, an acclaimed actor, award-winning writer, and Grammy-nominated artist, will be playing the part of Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Han Solo Star Wars film, helmed by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich — previously cast as Han Solo — in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.
Oh that Lord and Miller, ever the jokers. Glover first came to fame as goofball jock Troy on cult classic comedy series Community before popping up in numerous fan favourite roles in movies like Magic Mike XXL and The Martian. Most recently he’s been headlining the critically acclaimed drama series Atlanta as star, writer and producer, proving he’s more than just a funny man. Which he’s technically already done when he also launched a super successful Grammy-nominated hip hop music career under the stage name Childish Gambino. Glover can be goofy, silky smooth and deathly serious, and packs tonnes of natural charm so he’s a perfect fit to take on the role originally made famous by Billy Dee Williams in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Glover’s Lando will of course be playing off Alden Ehrenreich’s young Han Solo, and the pairing should make for some pretty dynamic viewing. It’s unclear exactly which direction the story of this movie will take, as all we know is that it will show a young Han Solo years before Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi ever hired him and his Wookiee partner Chewbacca in an infamous Mos Eisley cantina. Recent casting rumours though have hinted that we may be seeing a recently revealed bit of backstory from the Star Wars comics involving Han Solo’s “wife”.
With Glover now offically joining the production as Lando though, I’m pretty sure that many fans are hoping to see the much talked about sabbacc card game in which Solo won the legendary Millennium Falcon spaceship off of Lando.
The untitled Han Solo movie is set for release on May 25, 2018.
