Since destroying his and Samwise Gamgee’s promise ring in the fires of Mount Doom, Elijah Wood has gone on to make some pretty interesting movie choices. He most recently sported a creepy moustache and giant knife in the disturbing slasher flick, Maniac – a film with the unique visual hook of being shot completely from the killer’s point of view.
And now to one-up that, he’s joined forces with writer/director Nacho Vigalondo and former adult star Sasha Grey for Open Windows, a “chase film” that plays out in real time and is told entirely from a laptop screen. Check out the film’s first, rather intriguing trailer to see exactly what I mean.
Jill, the most exciting actress of the moment, refuses to have dinner with Nick, a fan who won a date with her in an Internet contest organized by the distributor of her latest film. In return, a guy named Chord, posing as Jill’s campaign manager, help Nick to follow in the footsteps of the actress from his own computer. Nick starts a game in which he realizes that is only a puppet into the manic plans devised by Chord, to hunt down the star.
While Nacho Vigalondo may not be as much of a household name as Elijah Wood (or depending on the liberal nature of your household, Sasha Grey), his Los Cronocrimines (aka Timecrimes) was one of the most inventive and clever time travel movies of the last couple of decades, so I have some high hopes for this. Vigalondo apparently made use of 12 different types of cameras, including webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras, security cameras and satellite cameras, which allowed him to keep the unique visual angle while still making “a 90-minute chase [movie], a continuous climax with unrelenting tension… it is also a powerful viral tool, with a wide potential for different audiences.”
And it has Sasha Grey in it, taking off her clothes.
There is currently no release date set for Open Windows.
