There is a trend in Hollywood among actors and actresses. It would seem that the moment they win their first Oscar for a fantastic dramatic role, they follow that up with complete dog bollocks. Halle Berry went from Monster’s Ball to Catwoman, Christoph Waltz went from Inglourious Basterds to Green Hornet, Charlize Theron went from Monster to Aeon Flux and Cuba Gooding Jr. went from Jerry Maguire to the rest of his sad career.
At this stage, Reese Witherspoon is the frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar for her turn in the drama Wild. If she does walk away with a golden statue on Sunday night, that would make her follow-up movie Hot Pursuit, a screwball, odd couple action comedy co-starring Sofia Vergara. And based on this first trailer, Witherspoon may just be keeping that old Hollywood tradition alive. Maybe.
It’s not all bad, as there are certainly some funny moments to be found in this preview, and the chemistry between the mismatched pair seem like it could be entertaining. But there are also a couple of painfully unfunny stretches here with some of the editing of the trailer make it seem even worse. Or maybe I’m just being a boring old so-and-so. An uptight and by-the-book cop (Reese Witherspoon) tries to protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Sofia Vergara) of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.
Hot Pursuit was directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip) and also stars John Carroll Lynch, Richard T. Jones and Rob Kazinsky. It is scheduled for release on May 8, 2015.
