Anxious to see Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele start spanking each other? If so – if you are on the edge of your seat waiting for the Fifty Shades Of Grey movie adaptation – you’ve helped make it the most watched debut for a trailer so far this year.
The Hollywood Reporter quotes research firm Zefr in saying the film’s long-awaited trailer has accummilated over 36.4 million views on Youtube in its first week, surpassing the previous record holder: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ debut week tally of 31 million. That is followed by Godzilla and Transformers: Age Of Extinction – 26.3 million views each – and then Dumb and Dumber To at 23.5 million.
The Fifty Shades trailer isn’t, well, much of anything. At first I watched something that I realised was actually a re-edited fashion ad. Then I found the real trailer, which still felt like a Calvin Klein commercial. Appropriately lead actor Jamie Dornan used to be a Calvin Klein model. But other than hint at some titillation which just makes me want to watch Secretary again, the trailer has a new version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love – that could also have really boosted its appeal.
The trailer has already courted controversy when a U.S. network showed an edited version on morning TV. Critics already hate the trailer and fans have already mobbed forums and comment sections to defend their obsession. So, yeah, this is bound to be a huge hit. And they called me a fool for buying that warehouse of mouth gags…
