So yesterday we saw the debut of the new Spider-Man costume for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and just like director Marc Webb teased a while back, it definitely had “bigger eyes”. It also had a new webbing pattern and colour scheme, which I would say makes it the closest to the comic book version out of all the movie costumes.

Now thanks to some new set pics, we get to see that costume in action as Spidey…. Wait. Er, what is Spidey and that dude doing behind that tree? Just how friendly is this neighbourhood Spider-Man?!

Despite my misgivings about certain aspects of the previous film, I really love the straight from the comic book characterization that Andrew Garfield has brought to the character, especially in Spidey’s iconic movement and poses, as is evidenced here in those out of costume rehearsal shots. I’m actually pretty excited for this sequel, especially now that we’ve shook off the burden of revisiting the origin story again.

Chronicle star, Dane DeHaan, who was recently cast in the role Peter Parker’s best friend and son of his nemesis, Harry Osborn, spoke to the New York Times and revealed that he was also taking this role very seriously.

“”I’ve been preparing. Right now it’s just about getting all my work done and bulking up a little bit. I’ll start shooting fairly soon in New York. I work out incredibly intensely six days a week and I eat every two hours. Mostly proteins and veggies. I consume at least 3,000 calories a day. I’ve already gained seven pounds in six weeks!”

Now DeHaan bulking up is quite an interesting tidbit, as Harry himself has never been the most physically gifted of characters. However, in the comics he did have a stint as his villainous father, Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin’s successor, the Hobgoblin. James Franco, who played Harry in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, already showed us this villainous transformation in the well deserved much maligned Spider-Man 3.

Could Webb be going back to this well again? I certainly don’t hope so, as I want to see this new franchise head off new directions now instead of just rehashing what came before.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theatres on May 2, 2014.

In “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
