The Oscars are less than a month away, but before the big awards ceremony gets underway, first we need to see everyone else get the opportunity to pick their favourite films for the year. And arguably, one of the most prestigious awards outside of the Oscars itself is the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Awards). Much like the Oscars, this is one of those film awards ceremonies which has quite a broad reach across the film industry and recognises all the major categories including some of the more technical categories missing from the likes of The Golden Globes or Guild awards. Also, with many members part of both the BAFTA and Academy Awards voting panels, it’s also arguably the closest bet to predicting exactly who will walk away with the most awards come Oscar night.

And so just which are those movies that garnered the love of the British Academy? Well, it appears even the British have fallen in love with Alfonso Cauron’s epic Roma – which ashamedly I have yet to watch despite it being available already on Netflix – and The Favourite. While the love for The Favourite is unsurprising considering it is regarded as a British film, Roma, which features a mostly unknown cast, is in a foreign language and is a lot more simplistic in nature really has appeared to capture people’s hearts with its deeply personal story. No foreign language film has ever one an Oscar for Best Picture, but given that Roma has swept up all of the major Guild awards and now the BAFTAs, it is certainly on track to breaking more trends.

Those were not the only big winners of the night which included a wide range of films including Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, A Star is Born and yes, even Black Panther got an award. Two in fact if you count the Rising Star award as something worth taking note of.

At the end of the evening, although Roma with four awards and The Favourite won seven, there was a good spread of winners across all of the other categories. Success at the BAFTAs does not guarantee success at the Oscars, but you can’t judge movies based on one award show alone and winning this number of BAFTAs is remarkable enough in its own right.

Thankfully, for many of you who are less interested in these type of award shows and see them as nothing more than a popularity contest for votes, award season is almost coming to an end and we can start focusing once again on the real blockbusters that are coming our way.

Black Panther suffered from awful cgi in some places and it won?

How on earth Black Panther won over Infinity war for visuals is beyond me. Other than one back spot in Infinity war (banner in the hulkbuster) it was far superior. You could easily see some of the poor CGI of characters in Panther.
