It’s starting to become pretty damned cold – which means that Winter is indeed coming. It’s not quite that cold up in Joburg yet, but judging from all of the whining the folk in our fairest cape keep doing, it’s safe to assume the cold is on its way.

There are a couple of things I love to indulge in when the weather turns sour; the usual comfort foods: stews, soups, long-braised meats like oxtail served with fluffy mashed potatoes. There’s another comfort food I must have every yearand it hails from the land of chocolate, hills, Nazi gold, pedantic time-keeping and neutrality. Their flag’s also a big plus (What? The same joke twice in one day?) Yep, it’s the Confoederatio Helvetica, which is not a group of people who have a hard-on for a specific typeface (we call them designers), but rather the Latin name for Switzerland.

One of my favourite winter-time comfort foods is raclette, the name of a cheese and the way of serving it. A Long-time comfort food of Alpine shepherds who would grill entire wedges of cheese over an open fire and then scrape the gooey melty bits off on to potatoes and cornichons; little French pickles. It’s often accompanied by a selection of cured meats and a glass of crisp and dry white wine. It’s simple stuff – but it’s damned delicious. It’s friggin’ melted cheese – how could it not be?

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
