Mr Holmes

I am pretty sure that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be horrified astounded with all the different iterations of his very famous Sherlock Holmes. The detective has been in huge blockbuster movies played by Iron Man Robert Downey Jr., in the absolutely stellar Sherlock Holmes, and even has a TV series where his sidekick is played by a rather attractive Asian woman… Yeah, lost me there a bit too. So I am delighted that one of my favourite actors is getting the chance to bring new depth to the role and that is exactly what I think Sir Ian McKellen will do.

Appearing in Mr. Holmes as a rather aged detective who is slowly losing his brilliant mental abilities, the film doesn’t just offer a new story but also gives us a glimpse into his past – in particular one case that he couldn’t solve. We even see him sitting in a cinema watching stories of his adventures with his dear friend Dr Watson, so a rather nice post modern spin on what we have seen up till now. So what’s the movie about? Have a read and check out the latest trailer below.

MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. In 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare.  Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.  Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

Well that looks positively awesome. I mean come on, what’s not to like! At least he puts us right on what he actually like to smoke (I think I can hear sounds coming from Doyle’s grave). I mean it also has Hiroyuki Sanada (Sunshine) in it!

The movie is set to land in July.
