“In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue… natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it’s an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment.”
Back in 2004, those lines were immortalised in possibly the definitive and most underrated take on The Punisher. Since then? The character has essentially been in Limbo, merely popping up in Punisher: Warzone, a crazy yet equally underrated kickass flick, as well the bootleg short Dirty Laundry. But it’s time for Frank Castle to make a proper return.
And he’ll be doing just that in season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil!
Jon Bernthal has been cast as the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante, a take-no-nonsense soldier who wages war on crime after he survives a gangland shooting that claimed the lives of his family. Deadly, efficient and driven, this is one vigilante who doesn’t hold back. Which means that he’ll be coming into conflict with Daredevil. The two have a storied history, with the Punisher once forcing the blind hero to make an impossible decision:
As for casting, I think Netflix has nailed it here. Bernthal kicked all kinds of ass in the TV series The Pacific and World War 2 tank-actioner Fury, and bringing that hardened edge to the second season of Daredevil will no doubt make for a more authentic Frank Castle. Thomas Jane, you might have a contender here.
All I know is, I’m beyond happy to see the cult classic character making a return.
