midweek mouth off

The 66th Annual Primetime Emmys were held on Monday night, in case you missed the full list of winners you can catch up here.

While there were some surprises, like the fact that The Big Bang Theory still manages to get nominated, let alone win anything, it was no surprise that Breaking Bad managed to scoop almost everything in the Drama category.

So what are your thoughts? Did you think that True Detective should have won everything instead? Was Orange is the New Black snubbed? Will Steven Moffat’s ego ever deflate after his win for Sherlock? Let’s hear it!

Tough year I think. True Detective vs Breaking Bad? Flip, I wouldn’t want to make that call, not by a long shot. I suppose one does have to bring into the equation that True Detective was 10 episodes, 10 episodes of totally awesome granted!

I really don’t get all the BBT hate.

Some people hate seeing themselves on TV. 😉

Nope. I’ve had this criticism thrown at me already, and I can tell you with 100000% assurance that that’s not why I don’t like it. The show is simply not funny (and I will add the caveat of “to me” there before I get chewed up for that).

Do yourself a favour and go watch the clips on Youtube where they’re removed the canned audience laugh track, and what you’re left with are “jokes” that make ZERO funny sense. There’s one in particular I remember, where Sheldon walks in and says he’s found his old Mario Bros saved game or something, and one of the guys says its cool, now they can replay the game, and the “audience” just bursts out laughing like its the funniest thing that’s ever been said. But remove the laugh track, and it’s literally just two straightforward sentences. No joke. No punchline. Nothing.

I disagree, I really like all the references, and I actually laugh WAY before the “audience” for some of the jokes. It speaks to my inner-geek

Now see that I actually have no problem with. Differing tastes is one thing, but this criticism that I’m just butthurt because I’m a comic book/science geek and don’t like to see “myself” being made fun of is kinda ridiculous.

My mother & sister love it. I was sitting having dinner once while it was on & they were carrying on about WOW & my mom said they sound like me. My eye twitched & my hand tightened on the knife, but she’s my mother.

Indeed, lots of people have butthurt about unnecessary things

          Monday – Dr! Who
          Tuesday – Shutter Island
          Wednesday – BBT

          😀

I don’t care for it myself, watched the first season & that was it. Find most of them annoying – especially Leonard & his whiny little voice. Makes me want to slit his wrists.

Leonard Season 1 is terrible. My wife and I recently re-started with S1, and MAN, I really don’t like S1 Leonard. He really evolved as a character

It’s not hate. It’s just not that original and after several seasons even more so. The show may be good, but does it deserve to win awards for doing the same thing over and over again? I’d lay the same complaint at Modern Family’s feet: it’s good, but it’s no longer groundbreaking.

I get that, sure the show is awesome, but winning again and again does seem odd.

I have no interest in the awards shows. To me they come across as self-congratulation.

I think True Detective’s failure to nab awards is down to its own hubris. The show should really have been entered under the miniseries category (it’s a 10 episodes long anthology show! it doesn’t get more “miniseries” than that!), where it would have killed everything else. But no, they wanted to throw their lot in with the big boys in the Drama Series category. And there was just no way in hell that Breaking Bad was going to be denied in its final, and arguably best season.

Don’t really care. Often great shows are overlooked and highly familiar shows get lauded. The only real winners of award shows are the people selling ad space in the commercial breaks.

It’s worth remembering that these awards aren’t won just on merit. There
is lobbying and some networks or production houses take awards very
seriously. So when you have a show that already features some of the
highest-paid actors on television (like BBT), the studios don’t just
want fiscal success. They want critical and award success as well. That means a lot of arms get twisted and palms greased.

    So
ego has a big part to play in why such big shows keep winning awards. It
also explains why shows rarely win anything in their first season. Breaking Bad didn’t even get any first season nominations (though yes it did have a super-short season).
