Well suit up in yellow spandex, smoke a cigar and call me bub, because it’s time for another round-up of the North American movie weekend. It was a Memorial Day weekend in that part of the world, which meant that various films had the potential to be real blockbusters thanks to some public holiday action. A new team of X-Men and a new Adam Sandler flick all debuted during that Friday off. Here’s how they all did.
Easily taking the number one spot from Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past reigned at the box office. A $90.7 million debut saw to this, although this figure is slightly lower than recent 2014 outings. Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened up with $95 million and the recent Spidey sequel which made over $91 million on its intro weekend.
X-Men: DOFP is also well behind X-Men: The Last Stand, which still holds the X-gene record for the highest franchise opening at over $102 million. And that was eight years ago. Still, it looks like the latest X-entry is going to do some solid business, as international ticket sales are already clocking in at over $261 million for the X-film.
The only other new film debuting in the top ten was Adam Sandler’s Blended. Third time was not the charm for his latest rom-com with Drew Barrymore, as the movie hit third place with $14.2 million and bad reviews. At this rate, Blended will be lucky to make back its production budget before it bows out of the top ten. Which shouldn’t take long.
- X-Men: Days of Future Past – $90.7 Million
- Godzilla – $31.4 Million
- Blended – $14.2 Million
- Neighbors – $13.9 Million
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $7.8 Million
- Million Dollar Arm – $7 Million
- The Other Woman – $3.6 Million
- Rio 2 – $2.5 Million
- Chef – $2.2 Million
- Heaven is for real – $1.9 Million
Top ten departures this week include Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Mom’s Night Out. After 8 weeks, the Cap sequel has managed to make over $707 million worldwide, a massive improvement over the original movie which made $370 million in 2011.

Thor Dark World was also less than 1 billion. I think it did about USD644 million.
