New on Netflix: June 2018

As we head into winter, Netflix is giving us some great excuses to stay inside, curled up in front of the TV with a blanket, some hot chocolate, and new episodes of our favourite shows.

Netflix Original Series

You Me Her: Season 3

Emma, Jack and Izzy face big decisions about parenthood, their careers and whether they’re meant to be together.

Following the complex realities of polyamory and “throupling”, Netflix’s You Me Her maintained a high audience rating over the previous two seasons. To be honest, I’ve never even heard of it before, so if you’re excited for season 3, let me know!

Sense8: The Series Finale

One final mission. June 8th.

It’s not often that a cancelled show gets to have all its loose ends tied up. Luckily for fans of Sense8, the outcry over its cancellation was loud enough that the Wachowskis could bring it back for one last special to wrap up the story. How much will be wrapped up is still up in the air, since the series was originally planned to last for five seasons.

Marcella: Season 2

As Marcella gets to the root of her blackouts via hypnotherapy, her son becomes entangled in a police search for a child killer with an unusual M.O.

Dark, complex and filled with more twists and red herrings than an Agatha Christie novel, Marcella is a unique, powerful crime drama. Those that love British crime dramas will thoroughly enjoy Marcella.

Marvel’s Luke Cage: Season 2

As his popularity soars, Luke Cage finds his world suddenly upended by a mysterious newcomer with astonishing powers — and sinister plans for Harlem.

Probably the most highly anticipated of Netflix’s June schedule, the second season of Marvel’s Luke Cage sadly only launching towards the end of the month. Hopefully, the wait is worth it!

GLOW: Season 2

Armed with leotards, leg warmers and plenty of lipstick, the women of GLOW return with style. The season returns for a second round.

While I didn’t watch the first season, I know Kervyn is very excited for season 2 of Glow. It must be all the glitter and spandex…

Kiss Me First

A lonely young woman hooked on a virtual reality game befriends a party girl who leads her into a world of new thrills and dark secrets.

An ambitious mix of live action and CGI, Kiss Me First has been called “dark” and “promising” by some reviews. From what I can tell from the trailer, it’s partly Young-Adult, partly Ready Player One meets Black Mirror. Which makes for a very interesting combination.

Thelma

Finding herself unexpectedly attracted to a female classmate, a religiously devout college student begins to show signs of supernatural abilities.

Moody and dreamlike supernatural coming-of-age story Thelma has Stephen King level twists and turns. It’s stunningly gorgeous, dark and open-ended, and asks more questions than it answers.

Alex Strangelove

High school senior Alex Truelove is on a mission to lose his virginity, much to the excitement of his patient girlfriend and rowdy friends.

According to critics, awkward teen comedy Alex Strangelove is whimsical and delightful. Exploring interesting themes with a well-rounded cast and a sharp script, backed with a rad, retro sountrack, it’s not your typical teen film.

Set It Up

Two overworked and underpaid assistants concoct a plan to get their insufferable bosses off their backs by setting them up with each other.

Set It Up looks wholly predictable, based on the trailer I can guess exactly how it’s going to end. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for something lightweight, this will be a cute diversion with a good cast and some laughs.

Netflix Origin Documentary

November 13: Attack on Paris

Survivors and first responders share tales of horror, kindness and bravery that unfolded in Paris amid the deadly terror attacks of Nov. 13, 2015.

There is no denying that the coordinated terror attacks that unfolded in Paris in November 2015, in the Bataclan and surrounding areas, were tragic and appalling. The deadliest attack in France since World War II left 130 dead and over 400 injured. In this new documentary, first responders and survivors from the attacks share their stories.

The Staircase

This documentary series offers a revealing inside look at the high-profile murder case of author Michael Peterson, accused of killing his wife in 2001.

Accused of the murder of his wife, Kathleen, The Staircase follows the high-profile murder trial of crime novelist Michael Peterson, from the first 911 call to the verdict. Originally screened in 2004, the version that will stream on Netflix includes the original eight episodes, a two-hour follow-up from 2012, as well as three brand-new episodes focusing on new evidence.

New Licenced Series Available

Fan favourites are leading in the new licenced series coming to Netflix this month. The most surprising for me is that Teen Wolf is still going, I dropped out after one season because let’s be honest, it’s kind of terrible.

I can’t say I would recommend a good deal of the new licenced movies coming to Netflix, but there are some gems to be found if you scratch around.  Just don’t bother with The 5th Wave.
