I have not been a fan of much of Luc Besson’s latest work, but I will certainly count many of his early world building movies among some of my favourites. Particularly his epic Fifth Element, where he did a fantastic job in creating this incredible universe and weaving quite an incredible and engaging story into it all. And it’s the similarities in particular with this movie that has me so excited about his next project, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

From what we’ve heard and seen about this film so far, it seems that Besson is taking a similar approach to the design of his earlier epic, especially in how it’s been a passion project and story that he has been working on for years. And while its not a wholly original story, as this is based off a popular French comic book Valerian and Laureline, he is putting so much effort into the film to build the right world that ir makes me very hopeful that we could see the director back to his visionary best.

And based on these new screenshots (including a first look at Rihanna’s character in the film), he is certainly doing a fantastic job in building said world. I’ve never read the comics, so have no clue what to expect from a story perspective, but it certainly does look good.

That’s not all though, as we also have a trailer for the movie that should be released later this evening to give us more of a snapshot into the movie and what we can expect:

I’m excited. From the strange creatures and characters, to the incredible scope of the world, this is looking like we could be in for yet another space epic. It will probably be over indulgent and full of excessive moments which are true to Besson’s nature, but it looks like it will be an incredible journey. What do you think?

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, will blast into theaters July 21st, 2017.
