Just a year after their 20th anniversary the Mighty Morphin Power rangers are set to come back in a new, re-imagined movie. Seban, who own the IP, have teamed up with Hunger Games studio Linosgate to produce a new movie that I can only imagine will be described using my favourite word ‘gritty’. Haiman Seban, who created the Power Rangers said “Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.” Yeah, I think he meant more gritty.

I remember my younger brothers watching and loving the Power Rangers as kids but to be honest couldn’t get past the fact that every episode was identical. Still they have survived for 20 years which just proves that there are those out there (cough Darryn) who cannot get enough. Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer went on to say that “The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.”

The last two movies were released in the 1990s, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (a deserved 4.9/10 on IMDB) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (an equally deserved 3.2/10 ), but perhaps with Lionsgate at the helm we will see something that is more accessible to a wider audience. There is no word on whether the new movie will tie in with the series but we will keep you posted here.
