After Gareth Evans blew our minds – and also broke our legs, cracked our skills, punctured our lungs and sliced our throats – with The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2: Berandal, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the Idonesian martial arts movie market. Specifically though on the incredibly talented stars of Evans’ two modern day action movie classics. But whereas The Raid co-star Joe Taslim has translated that success to big Hollywood productions like Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond, leading man Iko Uwais hasn’t really done much.
Uwais showed up for one fight scene in Keanu Reeves’ Man of Tai Chi and had a bit part alongside several of his Indonesian peers in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he hasn’t really fully utilized those ridiculously good martial skills of his on-screen in anything… until now!
Uwais is starring in Headshot, a new Indonesian actioner from the Mo Brothers, aka Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel, who have done a couple of lesser known local movies on their own, but also co-directed a segment of anthology film V/H/S/2 with Gareth Evans. And it appears that some of his ultra-violent, no holds barred, in your face filmmaking tendencies have rubbed off the two Indonesian directors if the explosive and action packed first trailer is anything to go by.

Oh hell, yeah! You can sign me up for that right now, please!
Headshot is set to be released in February 2017, but will be making it’s theatrical debut at the upcoming Toronto International Film Fest. If you remember correctly, The Raid was really also discovered at a film festival as it just exploded onto the scene out of absolutely nowhere at SXSW. Could Headshot replicate that achievement?
