There’s a moment in McG’s first Charlie’s Angels movie, where Sam Rockwell, who up until this point of the movie had been a twitchy nerd with more perspiration than social skills, transforms himself into a slick, white pants wearing sexgod. And he does it with just a couple of dance moves.
That’s the chameleonic skill of Rockwell. We’ve most recently seen him all grinning and supportive in the trailer for Way, Way Back, but in this first trailer for A Single Shot he’s gone in the opposite direction, getting all dark ‘n dirty as he goes up against William H. Macy’s evil toupee.
This white-knuckle thriller starts with a bang: a single shot, aimed at a lone deer, that hits and kills a young woman. The hunter, John Moon (Sam Rockwell, “Seven Psychopaths”), watches her die before discovering a box of money near her body. In a desperate panic, he takes the cash — hiring a low-rent lawyer (William H. Macy, “Fargo”) to fight his wife’s (Kelly Reilly, “Flight”) divorce suit — and attempts to cover up the killing. But when he discovers that the money belonged to a group of hardened criminals, the hunter becomes the hunted in this tense cat-and-mouse struggle in the backwoods of West Virginia.
Although the story – at least from what can gleaned from the trailer – does seem to be borrowing quite a bit from No Country For Old Men, right down to the really bad haircuts, that is still quite the impressive cast that’s been assembled there, and to watch them bringing their A-games should be quite a treat.
A Single Shot will take aim on cinemas on September 20, 2013.

I like Sam Rockwell even though I haven’t seen too many films with him in it. I loved Moon.
