We have a few more days until Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them hits the local cinema circuit and prompts a battle of magics with Marvel’s Doctor Strange at the box office. But like I said, that’s still a few days away, and right now Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme is still weaving a spell on local moviegoers, maintaining the top spot its held since its release three weeks ago. This weekend past Marvel’s latest added another R1.6 million to its local box office tally, which now stands at R11.67 million.
Regular readers of this feature though will know that R1.6 million is nothing really to crow about, but it would seem that was enough as SA saw a very slow box office weekend (everybody too busy drowning their sorrows after the Springbok game to go to the movies?). And you can expect those numbers to stagnate once again when Newt Scamander and his Fantastic Beasts apparate onto the scene this Friday.
It will be all up to Fantastic Beasts though, as this weekend past’s three new additions to the charts didn’t do much, despite all catering to different audiences. The Mel Gibson action thriller Blood Father could only debut at fourth with R739,109, which is a bit disappointing as the movie is actually a pretty solid return to form for the veteran actor. What’s even more sad is that that it just just barely managed to beat out Max Steel, which is in fact a terrible movie by all accounts. Spare a thought for the parents who no doubt had to sit through Max Steel for their kids, helping to give it its R712,182 fifth spot debut.
And I’m just going to assume that many of you read my not-so-good review of Skiptrace (probably not, but let me have this delusion of influence, damn it), resulting in a very poor opening for Jackie Chan’s latest film. The globetrotting buddy caper, which sees Chan teaming up with Jackass‘ Johnny Knoxville, made it onto the Top 10 charts by the skin of its teeth, only managing a tenth place best debut of R379,549.
