STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS synopsis revealed. Get ready for a manhunt!

JJ Abrams is a secretive dude. That guy must be a killer at the poker table because he never lets slip what he has in his hand. But sooner or later you got to tell people something, and with the first official teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness (Urgh. Bad title induced migraine!) being just over a month away, it’s time to let some people in on the secret..

To that regard, Paramount have revealed the film’s synopsis, so that we can finally learn a little bit more about why Kirk and his Get-Along Gang are heading off into these dark places.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Right, first the non-spoilery bit. They used the title as a sentence fragment. I have no idea whether to laugh or cry about this, but I’m definitely leaning towards the latter.

Now, the synopsis is carefully worded so as not to reveal the film’s biggest mystery thus far: the identity of the main villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch, but it actually does provide us with a clue. Now for those of you who don’t want to know a thing about the film before going into it, I suggest you not read what comes next I ain’t kidding. I will not be held responsible for your geek mental well-being! In fact, you can probably expect me to point and laugh in your general direction.

Right, are they all gone? Good. Now then, this synopsis leads me to believe that Karl Urban’s little slip up at Comic Con was actually the truth, despite how much backtracking he and Abrams did afterwards. At the time he claimed that Cumberbatch would be playing Star Trek: The Orifinal Series first season villain Gary Mitchell.

In a nutshell, Mitchell is a fellow Starfleet Academy alum who gets exposed to some strange energies that give him godlike abilities that drive him mad as they grow in power. That certainly sounds very one-man-weapon-of-mass-destruction-ish to me.

Also in the original show, Kirk maroons Mitchell on the planet Delta Vega, as he doesn’t want to kill his old friend, although he is eventually forced to. In 2009’s Star Trek, Delta Vega pops up again as the planet on which Kirk runs into old time displaced Spock as well as Scotty. That planet was completely covered in ice back then, so I doubt it’s the “war-zone” world that the synopsis refers to, but it may have a part to play.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens on 17 May 2013 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
