We’ve seen brief glimpses of what to expect from Netflix’s upcoming Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events TV series and in particularly, what type of look they give the show which is designed to appeal for kids, yet still be similarly dark and grim. The first trailer gave us more to look at, but for me, I still wanted to see more to make up my mind about the show. Especially around what type of Count Olaf Neil Patrick Harris will make and the unfortunate inevitable comparisons with Jim Carrey’s charismatic portrayal of the role.

Well, we don’t need to worry about only brief glimpses anymore as the second trailer for the series has just being released to give us a better look at what we might expect from the series:

And I must say that was better than I thought it might be. The series had so far looked like it would be a little too close to the movie and while there are certainly similarities, I’m glad they’ve gone for a slightly more comedic and light-hearted approach to it all. Particularly NPH, who is seemingly bring more lightness to the series and keeps it from getting too dark.

The art direction and set design is noticeably on a smaller scale, but its clear this is aimed at the younger audiences, with a lot of the humour aimed towards that audience. Adults may cringe at the ridiculousness of it all, but this should be palatable enough to please both adults and children alike, unlike many of Netflix’s more adult oriented series.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events also stars Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, Presley Smith, Joan Cusack, and Alfre Woodard, and premieres Friday the 13th of January on Netflix.

The full synopsis of the series and some new posters can be found below:

Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents’ mysterious death. The eight-episode series is a Netflix original production, executive produced by Emmy Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler, and also stars Patrick Warburton (Lemony Snicket), Joan Cusack (Justice Strauss), Malina Weissman (Violet Baudelaire) and Louis Hynes (Klaus Baudelaire). The series premieres January 13, 2017 only on Netflix.
