Suicide Squad to have “major presence” at Comic-Con; new character posters and TV spots revealed

3 min read

We’re currently smack dab in the middle of E3, which is essentially the video gaming world’s equivalent of Christmas. But in just a little more than a month’s time, it will be the turn of comic book and movie geeks to celebrate as the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con kicks off. We’ve already heard the rather massive piece of news that 20th Century Fox has completely pulled out of this year’s event due to their concerns about piracy. You may recall that the Deadpool trailer they released there last year was leaked online within minutes of its debut, causing much ire on the part of the studio.

Another trailer that was leaked at the same event was Warner Bros/DC Comics’ Suicide Squad, however WB’s reaction was a lot more constructive: They simply officially released the trailer online so at least fans would be watching the first preview of their movie in all it’s HD glory, instead of a distorted and tinny cellphone recording. What’s more, unlike the competition, that little security slip up has not dissuaded WB from Comic-Con one bit. In fact, THR is reporting that WB is going to have a “major presence” with Suicide Squad at the event this year.

“How major?,” you ask:

While details of who will be part of Warner Bros.’ Hall H presentation remain under wraps, DC Entertainment has revealed that the cast will also take part in a special taping of Conan O’Brien’s TBS show on Saturday, July 23, to be broadcast later that evening, as well as make an appearance at the DC Entertainment booth on the convention floor that day to sign for fans.

Additionally, part of the Hard Rock Hotel in the city’s Gaslamp Quarter will be transformed into the Belle Reve Penitentiary, the fictional prison that houses the supervillains who make up the Squad, featuring another Harley Quinn tattoo parlor (The first appeared at the SXSW festival in March) and a virtual reality experience that allows fans to fight alongside the Squad themselves in a scene from the movie.

DC also launched a fan contest called Squad Up! Thursday that invites fans to create cosplay based on the movie’s protagonists, with 11 different winners — one for each member of the team, as well as the Joker — being given an all-expenses-paid trip to Comic-Con next month.

How damn cool is that? Also, how damn envious are you right now that you’re not actually going to Comic-Con this year. Again. Just like me. Sigh… One day, I tell you. One day…

At least we got some cool new character posters for the movie, as well as three new TV spots to cheer us up a bit. Besides for the first TV spot, these have all been floating around the net before, but in low quality and have now been officially released. Check them out below.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, with Raymond Olubawale as King Shark, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Adam Beach as Slipknot. Directed by David Ayer.

Suicide Squad opens locally on 5 August.
