While Marion Cotillard may be best known to some as the scheming lady who knocked some Bat-boots in The Dark Knight Rises, the French actress has made a name (and collected some awards) for herself by starring in emotionally complex, human dramas. Her latest, which sees her teaming up with Jaoquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, definitely fits that mold perfectly, as we have family troubles, forbidden love, self sacrifice and Renner boasting a sidepath and pencil moustache that wasn’t groomed so much as it was engineered.

Here’s the international trailer, which being French, naturally has some slight nudity and salty language.

1921. In search of a new start and the American dream, Ewa Cybulski and her sister Magda sail to New York from their native Poland. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn and desperate to reunite with Magda, Ewa quickly falls prey to Bruno, a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. And then one day, she encounters Bruno’s cousin, the debonair magician Orlando. He sweeps Ewa off her feet and quickly becomes her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself.

The Immigrant was actually shortlisted for the Palme d’Or, the highest honour at the 2013 Cannes Film Fesstival, and marks the first time we’ve seen writer/director James Gray (The Yards, We Own the Night, Blood Ties) behind the camera again since 2008. He’s worked with both Cotillard and Phoenix before to great result, and according to all the positive buzz coming out of the festival circuit for this, he’s just picking up where he left off.

The Immigrant opens in Belgium and France on November 27, 2013, while The Weinstein Company will handle a further international release sometime next year.
