Race is a sports biopic movie centered around American athlete Jesse Owens (Stephen James) and focuses on a time in his career leading up to and including his participation at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. It was at this historic event that Owens cemented his place in history as the most successful athlete at the games and as such has been credited with single-handedly crushing Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy.
Watch how this story will unfold in this new trailer below.
This is a great story to bring to wider audiences and the trailer looks really promising. There are plenty of great movies centered around sports history and athletes that have had to fight not only the difficulties of professional sports but also the adversary faced being an athlete in less favorable times – Remember the Titans, 42, The Express and The Cinderella Man are a few movies that come to mind.
This story I feel however has a lot to offer. Not only does it focus on Owens rise to athletic fame but also the issues he has to deal with like racism and the pressures of being a symbol for the oppressed around the world. A cause that he fought out on the track and field tackling the Fuerer himself and his idealistic beliefs of a superior race.
Race was directed by Emmy award-winning director Stephen Hopkins (House of Lies, 24) and also stars Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons and Carise Van Houten. It is scheduled for release in February 2016.
