We’ve seen the teaser trailers, the teaser trailers for trailers (groan!), the unending lineup of character posters, hell, we’ve even seen the magazine fashion spread! But finally it’s here: the first full trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. And it’s a whopper.
Jennifer Lawrence may have been the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons lately, but I have a feeling that in a few months’ time we’re going to be reminded of exactly why we started talking about her in the first place. Out of Suzanne Collins’ three Hunger Games novels, Mockingjay was my least favourite – despite having the biggest set pieces – as the story became unnecessarily focussed on Katniss’ mopey and mawkish lovesickness, and thus was the movie(s) I had the most trepidation about. But when director Francis Lawrence took over the reins from original franchise writer-director Gary Ross, he stated that he would continue to follow Ross’ plan to downplay the story’s more ludicrously sappy elements.
And it definitely appears that he’s kept his word. The trailer shows us a new Panem, caught in the grip of war, with Katniss right in the middle, or more accurately, at the head of it. We get shots of her facing down President Snow, we get to see inside District 13 and the weapons being stockpiled there, and even Liam Hemsworth’s Gale showing he ain’t no slouch with a bow either. Especially ones with explosive arrows. We also get a look at a few new faces like Julianne Moore’s Alma Coin and Natalie Dormer’s Cressida (that’s her name, not her car), and some returning favourites like Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Plutarch Heavensbee.
And then there’s that money shot at the end of the trailer. Your move, Hawkeye.
“Mockingjay – Part 1” finds Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage.
The Hungers Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Jeffrey Wright, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland. It is scheduled for international and local release on November 21, 2014.
