And from a story about hackers with way too much power to… well, another story about hackers with too much power. Luckily though, this one is completely fictional. And also stars a Norse thunder god!

In Blackhat, the latest action-thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), Chris “Thor” Hemsworth trades in his magical hammer for a keyboard, as he has to help out some federal agents who clearly have a sunglasses fetish with taking down a rival hacker. Mann may have had a few missteps here and there in his career (I’m looking at you, Miami Vice), but he’s still an incredibly potent director who has already given us arguably the greatest heist ever put on film. Will he be able to do the same in cyberspace though? Well, the jury is still out after this trailer.

It certainly looks slick and thrilling enough, and the topical relevancy certainly won’t go amiss. Also, Hemsworth proved with the incredible Rush that he’s more just than a mountain of muscles who hangs out with tin men and rage beasts, and like I said before, Mann is a very safe bet more often than not. But there is admittedly a slight whiff Swordfish-iness to this whole affair, even though Mann is clearly striving for more technical realism (and less hilariously gratuitous Halle Berry boobs).

Set within the world of global cybercrime, Legendary’s “blackhat” follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

Blackhat also stars Jason Butler Harner, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom. It is scheduled for international release on January 16, 2015. There’s no local release date yet.
