Often in life it’s the small things that hit you the hardest because of the larger things they symbolise, and that’s what happens in this trailer for Kicks – a coming-of-age drama about a young man taking a stand.
The official plot synopsis is as follows:
When his hard-earned kicks get snatched by a local hood, fifteen-year old Brandon and his two best friends go on an ill-advised mission across the Bay Area to retrieve the stolen sneakers.
What I really like about this trailer is the tone it employs. I don’t get a sense of victimhood from the protagonist – it’s just a kid who doesn’t have much and who, when the one thing he wanted was snatched away, decides to do something about it. The movie comes across far more powerfully than I was expecting and it’s one I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for. What do you think?
Kicks is due for release in the US on 9 September. A debut film from director Justin Tipping, who co-wrote alongside Joshua Beirne-Golden, it stars Jahking Guillory, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Christopher Meyer, Kofi Siriboe, Mahershala Ali and Molly Shaiken.
