Time to do some father and son bonding in this first official image for A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD

It wouldn’t be a Die Hard film without John McClane being joined by someone to help him solve a puzzle or shoot a German thief who was supposed to be dead but was just biding his time before dramatically leaping out of a body bag and I’m drifting again.

In previous films, McClane has teamed up with Carl Winslow, Nick Fury and some kid who can haz the haxoring skillz. In Die Hard 5 though, he’s going to be doing some estranged bonding with his son, as they take on all of Russia. Here’s an official look at the tag team so far.

Jai “Spartacus” Courtney will be starring as McClane Jr, alongside Willis, with director John Moore calling the shots behind the camera. As Courtney mentioned to EW about the picture, it shows McClane and his son in a bit of a tense situation, which mirrors their own relationship;

The relationship isn’t always functional. These are two guys who have been estranged for some time. John likes to wing it, see what happens. Jack’s more of a strategist.

With Die Hard 5 taking place in Russia, there’ll be plenty of time to do some catching up though, presumably over vodka drinks, car chases and dangerous shoot-outs with pissed off gangsters and special forces.

But besides familial issues, there’s been very little revealed about the plot of A good day to Die Hard. We know nothing about the villains, but would it be too hard to assume that yet another Gruber pops up to get some form of revenge, such as in previous odd-numbered instalments of the franchise?

I’m bloody well hoping so.

A good day to Die Hard also stars Sebastian Koch, Yulia Snigir, Cole Hauser, Amaury Nolasco, Megalyn Echikunwoke and Anne Vyalitsyna, and is out next year February.

    I’m not sold on this. McClane is a loner and his sidekicks are usually there to help out in small ways, but not get killed. Sam Jackson was a bit of an exception, but then again – it’s Sam Jackson. A buddy-cop movie with his gun-toting son? It really feels like the wrong direction for the franchise.

    I actually think it’s a good idea… adds a new dynamic to the franchise. Would be an epic fail if was just another Die Hard movie… otherwise might as well just release Die Hard 4 with a new cover.

    The first Die Hard had John McClane as a seemingly normal cop who was put into a crappy situation, and responded in an extraordinary way… subsequent films lost a bit of that feel. DH 4 tried to add the family dynamic with his daughter… but didn’t reeeaaally deliver. Hopefully this film will put ‘ol John ‘Yippy Ki Yay MotherTrucker’ McClane into a fresh new no-win situation that has a bit more substance than the last installment… I imagine he’ll die in this film, and this Jai Courtney guycarrying on the franchise…that is…if audiences like him.

      I don’t agree. The whole emphasis around the series is McLane going against the odds on his own. Sidekicks did feature in the last two, but they did not cramp his style. But here we have another guy who appears armed and very capable, which changes what Die Hard has always been about.

      Family has appeared before – his daughter can also be seen in both the first and second movies.
