SKREEEEEOOOOONK! Last year’s Godzilla was a different kind of monster movie. Slower and more methodical, it was still a damn fine showing for the return of the King of the Kaiju. Thing is, it was a very different kind of Godzilla movie, coming off as a plus-size Jaws. Some fans didn’t dig that approach from director Gareth Edwards.

And that’s fine! Because you’ll be getting a more traditional kind of Godzilla next year when Toho revives their particular incarnation of the iconic beast. Toho unveiled their first teaser image for the upcoming 2016 project, which will appeal to anyone with a foot fetish:

Written and directed by Evangelion helmer Anno Hideaki, the new Toho Godzilla film is still being kept a secret. It’s been a long time since Toho even produced a Godzilla movie, as they decided to allow the franchise to rest back in 2004 with Godzilla: Final Wars.

What is known at this point, is that the 2016 film will be a complete reboot, which Toho taking advantage of the success of the US Godzilla movie, as they explained to THR:

This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when? The licensing contract we have with Legendary places no restrictions on us making domestic versions.

I like the Toho Godzilla movies. They’re silly, crazy and they make a man in a rubber suit look like an unstoppable force of nature that can spew atomic fire from its mouth. A Gareth Edwards sequel to the US Godzilla will eventually happen, but this should be a fine stopgap in the interim.
