The Bandito Bros’ flag waving US Navy SEALs film Act of Valor will be hitting our shores soon, and while the overflowing patriotism may be a bit much for some, it has done really well in its starred and striped homeland. Well enough in fact, to provide the production company with the clout to now get a bit more ambitious with their next project.
That project is writer/director Andrew Will’s The Prototype, a “less than $40 million” sci-fi actioner that’s already drawing District 9 comparisons, and which – based on this early trailer – is looking pretty damn sweet.
You can clearly see why Neil Blomkamp’s film is mentioned so often in the same breath as The Prototype, as there are certainly similarities, but our protagonist now starts out “alien” and then becomes more human. It’s not the biggest twist, but it could make for some very interesting story notes.
And yes, the titular character does appear to be result of a drunken night of sexual debauchery between Hellboy‘s Abe Sapien, the Iron Giant and one of those super soldiers from the Crysis videogames, but I’m OK with that. The film is still being shopped around to studios for distribution by the Banditos, and they have apparently been inundated with calls ever since this trailer appeared online. If it does get a deal, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit more spit and polish applied which will further increase its market appeal.
Plus, Neil McDonough is in it. That cold-eyed bastard is generally pretty reliable for this kind of thing (though I will probably always hold a grudge for the travesty of Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li).
