Depending on what your feelings are on the likes of Lost and Prometheus, you may respond to the name of Damon Lindelof differently: either enthusiastic interest or the insatiable urge to punch kittens. Love him or hate him, the writer has almost always attracted discussion about his work, and that’s probably not going to be any different for The Leftovers, Lindelof’s return to serialized television that surprisingly is not about cold pizza and braai meat for breakfast on Monday morning.
Based on Election and Little Children author Tom Perrotta’s 2011 bestseller of the same name, The Leftovers stars Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings, Armageddon), Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive, Tropic Thunder) and Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Thor: The Dark World), and tells the story of a group of people left over (duh) on Earth after a mysterious “rapture” – which may or may not be Biblical in nature – has 2% of the human population promptly disappear.
And if that cast and premise isn’t enough, the show will be kicking off on a high profile note with a pilot episode that’s penned by Lindelof – who will be acting as showrunner – and Perrotta and directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom). And in anticipation of the show’s debut, the first teaser trailer has just been released.
Oh noes! A mystery! We all know how much Lindelof loves to solve those with clearly laid out explanations, right?
The Leftovers will be debuting on HBO – yes, HBO – on June 15, 2014, right after the fourth season finale of Game of Thrones (which is a very clever way to pull in an audience.

Kervyn did you see the pilot Amazon released for The After? Also seems to follow a similar premise.
