Feeling down? Need something to perk you up? Well, let’s put a smile on that face! Next month sees the release of the latest movie in the DC Extended Universe, featuring the most lethal ladies in Gotham as they find themselves on the run from the most dangerous gangster in the city. A cop, a psycho, a songbird and a mafia princess all walk into a bar and out comes Birds of Prey And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
A twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
It looks fun, energetic and downright crazy. So how’d you like to see it for free then? And even a day earlier than anybody else? So seriously, I don’t know what it is, but people don’t want to go to free movies in Durban. This is both the public and film press. All the distributors cancelled all press/early screenings there because it was just an empty cinema every time.
Even JHB is a problem though. CPT will be at max capacity for screenings often, but on average JHB will maybe fill only half a cinema. Initially we heard feedback that it was because of the venue for JHB so distributors started moving the screenings around. Didn’t matter where they went, the same thing kept happening.

It’s not that people in Durban don’t want to go, it’s just that they literally don’t know about the screenings. Almost every month Mnet has a screening at Gateway and at it’s really difficult to win tickets for it because so many people enter. And so many people enter because the screenings get advertised on DSTV.
Simply put, If people aren’t attending then that means the distributors aren’t getting the word out as effectively as they should. It’s a failure of marketing, not apathy of the public.
