Reboots are the theme of the day it would seem in a lot of the new trailers that have recently been launched and here is another one with that iconic horror classic The Exorcist now been adapted into a TV series by Fox as well.
Horror series have become hot property on the TV screen of late, thanks no doubt to the success of TV series like excellent American Horror Story series, which balanced genuine horror scares with strong storytelling and made the industry realise that there is scope for a well-written horror show in the TV market. It’s not something that only Fox has realized, as there are other horror series in the works by other studios, also largely trying to capitalise on film franchises to produce hype on the small screen, such as Damien based on The Omen come to A&E.
The trailer itself appears a little light on scares, but focuses rather on setting the story of the series. Gone are Chris and Reagan MacNeil from both William Peter Blatty’s novel and William Friedkin’s film and instead we are introduced to the Rance family, portrayed by Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Brianne Howey, and Hannah Kasulka. The two priests in question are played by Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels and, according to the brief synopsis provided by Fox, will tackle one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession.
The pedigree of the cast and director certainly catches the eye, however it looks like it will differ significantly from the source material, so it’s difficult to know what to expect – which is also not a bad thing as it means you can watch the series from a completely fresh perspective.
The Exorcist pilot was directed by Rise of the Planet of The Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt and written by Jeremy Slater. The Exorcist is expected to debut our spring on Fox.
