The next Overwatch animated short will focus on Bastion – out on August 18th

Blizzard have already given us four excellent animated shorts; one about Winston, one about Widowmaker, one about Hanzo and Genji (my favourite of the lot I think), and one about Soldier: 76. I thought they were done for the foreseeable future, but much to my delight, another animation is on the way, and soon. It focuses on a certain Omnic that everybody just loves…

And by loves, I mean hates. Damn you Bastion… damn you and all your camping play of the game moments! At least the bot has a cool backstory going for it, which will be told in the next animated short – ‘The Last Bastion’.

“The Last Bastion” tells the origin story of the inquisitive transforming robot, Bastion. In this episode, we follow the forgotten battle automaton as it unexpectedly reactivates after laying dormant in the wilderness for over a decade. Fascinated by its unfamiliar surroundings, the curious omnic begins to investigate, but quickly discovers its core combat programming may have a different directive…

August 18th? Why, that’s next week! What is that though, a premise for ants? Bastion’s bio over on the Overwatch website contains far more detail…

One unique Bastion unit, severely damaged in the final battles of the war, was left forgotten for over a decade. It lay dormant, exposed to the elements and rusting while nature slowly reclaimed it. Overgrown with vines and roots and nested upon by small animals, the robot sat inert, seemingly unaware of the passing of time. That was until one fateful day, when it unexpectedly reactivated. With its combat programming all but lost, it instead displayed an intense curiosity about the natural world and its inhabitants. This inquisitive Bastion unit set out to explore its surroundings and discover its purpose on a war-ravaged planet.

Though “Bastion” appears to be gentle—even harmless, at times—its core combat programming takes over when the unit senses danger, utilizing its entire arsenal to eliminate anything it perceives as a threat. This has led to instances of conflict with the few humans it has encountered, and has driven it to avoid populated areas in favor of the wild, uncharted regions of the world.

I wonder if any other Overwatch characters will make a cameo? I really hope so, but I somehow doubt it. Regardless, I’ve loved every other Overwatch animated short thus far, and I’m sure I’ll love Bastion’s too.

Will the story contain Easter eggs and neat little titbits of information? You bet! What about another clue about Sombra? We’ll just have to wait and see…

I guess…. I mean that’s one way to compensate for a lack of any single player gaming options

      ^THIS

Goddamnit Gavin – this is EXACTLY my sentiment
It’s a character designed for when you start Overwatch, you know, to ease into the game ( because he’s static, he can get kills, he’s got self-heal )

But once the first 10 hour-mark is passed, this thing should be tossed like the used rag he is
There’s no place for him in competitive once out of the trenches… ( so above like lvl 45 )
