100 games coming to the PlayStation 4 in 2014

2 min read

Right now, Sony’s PlayStation 4 is still the darling of the console gaming industry, despite the fact that it really has very few games out, and few on the immediate horizon. Don’t fret, PlayStation 4 owners, those games are coming.

In a summit on the state of the PlayStation 4, Sony revealed that there are over 100 games coming for the system within this year. Of course, that likely means about 30 actual full retail games, 50 smaller indie games and 20 “experiences” that would be more at home on your phone. Of course, when those retail games include things like Infamous: Second Son and The Order: 1886, nobody’s complaining.

Except perhaps the poor folk who still can’t get PlayStation 4s. Sony says the console is still sold out just about everywhere, and the supply problems are set to continue for a while. Most stock, I’d imagine, is being sent to Japan right now, which sees the console being released later this month. No, the PlayStation 4 is not available on home turf yet.

“PS4’s are generally sold out at all retailers although regular supply is refreshing the channel,” Sony said.

SCE America marketing boss John Koller said Sony is aware it has to maintain stock levels, adding that the Playstation 4’s launch has been rather different to other machines in the PlayStation lineage.

“This is a story of engagement,” he said. “When demand outstrips supply, the promise of what’s to come is really critical.”

In the US at least, the PlayStation 4 really does seem to be out of stock just about everywhere. Checking NowInStock shows that the PS4 is sold out in the US and Canada, and available in limited supply in the UK.

The picture is reversed for the Xbox One. It’s available in the US, Canada and the UK without much fuss. Whether this has to do with increased demand for the PlayStation 4, or just better supply chain management on  Microsoft’s part is a different question entirely.

Locally, the PlayStation 4 is doing rather well; stock of the console seems to be gone just as soon as it comes in. It’s a great problem for Sony to have, especially seeing as we still don’t have an official local date for the release of Microsoft’s newest console. It really is unfortunate; the Xbox 360 had a really good run locally, but Microsoft has failed to capitalise on the brand awareness, handing local favour back to Sony.

The gaming division is doing quite well. Sony just sold off their computer division, I am sure they will trim some more fat as well. The play station however is not going anywhere any time soon, except to the number 1 spot in consoles.

Sony is gonna bomb unless they pump some features and games out for the system. Ebay is starting to flood with them… Its pretty incomplete at this point all around…

        February 12, 2014 at 20:01

Oh really, it’s incomplete, 2 months into the consoles life? Please, tell me more Professor. And, just out of curiosity, where are the thousands of titles for the One, since, you know, it’s only the PS4 that’s suffering such a terrible existence.

        • Rager170

          February 12, 2014 at 20:31

First, I said incomplete at this point. Can you read? Second, its on its 3rd month, almost 4th…, it released in November. I never said anything about xbox but since you mentioned it, the xbox at least has a decent selection of game genre’s to choose from and exclusives as well, from shooters, to fighting games, to driving games…. PS4 has either short little PSN games which are all sucky except Resogun or games which you can find on any console which are all basically 1st person shooters or kiddy games like Knack. Nothing to draw people to its attention or to show off its powers. This is widely known about the PS4 and there are tons of articles complaining about it which you can google for yourself.

I am not an xbox fan, I always have said that I dont like xbox. But I am not a PS Fanboy either. I give it straight and thats how I see the system at this point.

Exactly, I own a ps4, I tell everyone honestly the library sucks. The way these fanboy jag offs argue you would think they have a financial gain in the company they are a fan of.you enjoy system a , I enjoy system b, who gives a ish

          • Brian Murphy

            February 13, 2014 at 23:08

Nobody’s arguing that the PS4 library isn’t currently robust, I think most people would argue that having infantile breakdowns over the console less than 3 full months into it’s life, however, is an exercise in near insanity. Is there anyone out there, who thinks that the PS4’s library is complete, and somehow Sony is having it’s developers pivot to the PS5? Seriously, that’s how people sound.

Otherwise, why are you complaining? You knew what games would be available at launch, nobody kept it a secret. So, I don’t understand the problem. At launch, all hardware has a thin library when compared to…everything else. I just don’t get it, honestly.

    I received my PS4 yesterday :).

Had a couple of scares with two failures while attempting to update the firmware. But after that it didn’t fail to impress, especially with how quick it manages to install/load Killzone. Felt like two minutes until I was in game!

if the game developers are clever with there cutscenes they can actually make the loading processes seem short when they actually aren’t, Rockstar did very well with this in max payne 3

Bought mine yesterday for R6600 at CNA. Last one in the shop.
The last console I had was a PS2. What a difference! On FIFA 2014 the gameplay is so much better and more realistic. You can no longer just mindlessly sprint the length of the field.

The PS4 is garbage at this point. Not 1 firmware update since the original, far less features currently than the ps3 and the games are horrible so far and no good ones to be found anytime soon. Personally, I hate the thing now and it sits in my closet…

Actually im not. The system sucks big time. I am a loyal follower of Playstation and this is the most disappointing launch ever!

        • Dan Davidson

          February 12, 2014 at 20:56

At What’s good about it? Let’s compare the PS4 launch to the PS3 launch:

          PS3 debut launch exclusives:
          Resistance: Fall of Man

          PS4 debut launch exclusives:
          Killzone Shadow Fall

The graphics jump from PS2-PS3 was substantial, but only over time. Resistance wasn’t a good looking title and was about as much of an improvement from PS2 – PS3 as Killzone Shadow Fall is from PS3 – PS4.

PS3 at launch was $600/£425 and for that all you got was the console and one controller, no games.

PS4 at launch was $400/£350 for the console and one controller. Plus that leaves you with extra to buy games with and not only that, currency now is worth less than currency 7 years ago! So that’s more like an equivalent of $270/£110 extra to buy games with making it far better value for money.

PS3 at launch only offered blu-ray and music CD playback. It also offered Sixaxis motion control
          but no vibration.

PS4 at launch offered blu-ray playback, games in 1080p at 60FPS, services such as music unlimited and PlayStation Plus and came with The Playroom. It also offers a similar motion control to the Sixaxis on PS3 and face recognition (to sign in) motion control and voice functionality via PlayStation Camera. At launch you were also able to instantly share game footage online and is Facebook integrated. It also offers app switching to switch from game to app and if you wish – to homescreen just by tapping the PS button twice (or once to get to the homescreen). Another big bonus is actually having PlayStation Plus gives you a free game each month (Resogun, Contrast, Don’t Starve and Outlast so far. DriveClub coming) and remote play with the Vita is really cool launch feature that works really well, especially with Knack.

PS3 launch controller was the Sixaxis (predecessor to the Dualshock 3) it had no vibration, it had terrible triggers and had no features other than being wireless, rechargeable and Sixaxis motion control.

PS4 launch controller was the Dualshock 4, it had all of those features plus great triggers, a lightbar, a touchpad, better analogue sticks, heavier, more premium feel and a new design plus the options and share button (yes, options is no different to start, but anything was better than select)

And yes, PS3 is and was backwards compatible at launch but only with PS1 games. (the 60GB version being PS2 backwards compatible, but was faulty). But I don’t need a backwards compatible console unless they are in HD since I have all previous PlayStations and games and can play them whenever I like rather than bitching about non backwards compatibility when it’s actually coming to PS4.

Comparing the PS3 right now to the PS4 is like comparing a fully finished game to a beta of the sequel. It’s the same story over on the Xbox side and is the same every generation, the new consoles take a while to take off then after 2-3 years, the previous generation is completely obsolete. I was there at the launch of PS3 and it was far more pathetic than you give it credit for and we’ll probably have this argument next gen when you forget about how slow the PS4 was to take off. Just stop complaining and get over it. It’s not like no one saw this coming, early adopters get the slow start and that’s our fault for buying into a console before its a fully established console in the market.

And of course, not only is the PS4 the most powerful games console available right now (just like the PS3 was), but it’s actually smaller and lighter than the PS3 Slim as well as being smaller, lighter, more powerful and cheaper than its competitor, the Xbox One.

          • Rager170

            February 12, 2014 at 22:19

Well I disagree. For one, the reason its cheaper is because the technology isnt as cutting edge as the PS3 was, having a bluray in it was brand new and one of a kind, now bluray is considered a standard. Also, Sony loses money on their consoles to compete, that is why people say Sony will go bankrupt. The rest really is picking at straws, The controller lack of vibration? who cares. The controller sucks, with a battery life of about 6 hrs or so maybe and an annoying light bar that you cannot turn off… Also, the analog sticks are a drawback as your thumbs slide off easier than the PS3 ones, ive played many hours on the ps4 and noticed this from day one. Also, nobody likes the positioning of the options button on it, its annoying compared to the old setup. The camera for the ps4 is garbage. Its weak, you have to be at most 6 ft away from it and the voice commands are extremely poor. I think it recognizes about 8 words. Nobody cares about integration to Facebook, thats lame on its own. You mention Playstation Plus but its garbage because you have to pay $50 to get it, or else you cant play online. In regards to 1080P at 60FPS, so what. You wouldnt be able to tell the difference most of the time unless they were side by side, 720P is fine for gaming and everyone knows that. Im still curious if most games for the ps4 will even be native at 1080p or upscaled like ps3… In regards to the PS3 being backwards compatable, it was great and you could play PS2 games on it, i played many at launch and it was not faulty. The only fault was the power was too much and after years would die out, not an immediate problem and who is to say the PS4 wont suffer from the same problem? Time will tell. Backwards compatibility is great, it allows for me to get rid of the old system and put the new one into my home theater without cluttering it. Sorry but for now, id gladly buy a ps3 over a ps4 and enjoy many many more features and more games compared to paying $400 for really not much. Rather wait 2 years for a price drop, get it half the price for double the features. The PS4 is a flop at this point until Sony gets off its ass and updates. The PS4 should be able to do everything that the PS3 can do and more, but it cant do 3/4th, and that is the problem.

Really no firmware updates since the first ? I’ve downloaded 3 since I got mine on launch back in November . And please tell me what xboxone exclusives are any less lackluster than the ps4 exclusives? I own both. There’s things about both I like and dislike but I can say both launch libraries are lack luster. Outlast is better than any game I’ve played on Xbox one and it’s free to play. Prob not even gonna fire my x1 up again until titanfall. You need to troll somewhere else with your fanboy nonsense .

            February 13, 2014 at 22:28

I just don’t see how the launch of the PS4 was worse than the launch of the PS3. I was there for the launch of the PS3 and it was awful. I was stuck with a big black box that had very few games, all games for it were ridiculously expensive, there were no services, a slightly modified Dualshock 2 without vibration and performed worse than it’s competitor with multiplatform games. Until the first Uncharted released, I didn’t even know why I owned one, I was very disappointed. So far this gen I got Killzone with the console, The Playroom was preinstalled and I’ve had great fun from the FIFA 14 demo that I play with mates when they’re over and of course the 4 games I got for free from PS+ Resogun, Contrast, Don’t Starve and Outlast. I don’t feel short of games and I’ve only paid for one. Nothing like that was possible at launch for PS3, you didn’t get free games for a small subscription fee and you didn’t have the awesome indie games you have now like Resogun, Basement Crawl and Octodad Dadliest Catch. The Dualshock 4 itself is a huge improvement on the Sixaxis. It has vibration, a touchpad, improved triggers and as for the lightbar, if it annoys you, you can get this – http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/221358727936
I have it for one of mine just because it looks so good and doesn’t take away the features of the lightbar. And my thumbs don’t slip off either controller’s analogue sticks so I can’t really say about that but the positioning of the options and share buttons can be a little difficult to get used to but after getting used to it, I think it makes more sense being in the corner of the D-Pad and buttons. And the touchpad taking the place of the old select and start buttons is a definite bonus. it’s still a very symmetrical design. From my experience, there’s no downside to the Dualshock 4 from Sixaxis/DS3, but any minor downside is negligible compared to the upsides. Plus, the PS4 in standby charges the controllers so I never run out of battery. That wasn’t and still isn’t the case with the Sixaxis/DS3 controllers. PlayStation Camera isn’t prefect, it has its flaws, but it’s there at launch whereas the PS3 didn’t have anything like that at launch. Signing in with your face is a pretty neat feature too and the camera is worth it just for The Playroom. And the PlayStation 3 wasn’t as “cutting edge” as you say. Like I said, multiplatform games performed worse and the raw power difference wasn’t seen until Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 (3 years after it’s initial launch) whereas multiplatform games perform better on PlayStation this time so the hardware is the right type of powerful, not just more powerful for the sake of it and of course this year we have Deep Down, DriveClub, Infamous Second Son and The Order 1886 which will show off the power of the PS4 compared to the Xbox One. Whereas with the PS3, it took 3 years from launch to show the power off because Motorstorm and Resistance weren’t as impressive as everyone was hoping. The only reason the PS3 was so expensive was because of the blu-ray player inside. And if at the time you owned a 42″ 1080p TV, then you could afford a blu-ray player to make use of it so that wasn’t much of a seller for the PS3 until the slimmer 2009 model came out. 2009 really was the year that the PS3 was worth buying, the PS4 already is and is far more relevant than the PS3 was at the beginning of its lifecycle.

compare the launch of the PS4 to the launch of the PS3 and tell me what was better about the launch of the PS3. Because I can’t think of a thing. And one more thing – Sony aren’t losing money on the PS4, they did with the PS3.

          • Rager170

            February 14, 2014 at 17:31

Again, I disagree. I think all of the games suck for the most part and the lineup of ones to come isnt impressive to me either. I was especially annoyed when I recently found out MGS is only a partial game and the real game will be announced at a later time. Playroom comes with it, great, if you bought the $60 camera… and the camera sucks! Who sits at a max of 6 feet from their tv in the age of large screens? The PSN games are at the level of something I can buy on my ipad and/or are mostly arcady, they arent next gen standard. The controller sucks due to the life of the battery, i am constantly running out of battery power. I charge it on a friday night and sunday it dies on me. I have gone through 2 controllers that both have been this way. The lightbar on the thing is extremely annoying, especially when watching a movie in low lighting because the thing is bright and drains the battery which is surprising as LED lights use very little power. Also, when you turn it off and then turn it on while watching a movie, you have to then log in before you can pause… annoying. And my thumbs slip all the time on these due to them not being textured like the old ones. And dont be fooled by the weight, they are not made any better, ive already broken two of them. The home menu of the PS4 is a disaster. If i have 10 games that I have played, i have to scroll through all of them to find the one I want, you cant even group it as “games” and then scroll down.

The launch of the PS3 was much better for one main reason, the PS3 did everything and more that the ps2 did. The PS4 does not even close to doing as much as the PS3 can do. And at least the PS3 was backwards compatible so that you could continue playing the PS2 games on your new system and not feel like such a waste.

I realize there is potential with this system but it is very far from coming close to using it at this point. AT THIS POINT, are the key words and unfortunately it is a huge letdown to me and many others as of now… There are a zillions features that could have been added which weren’t and still are missing just to rush this out ahead of xbox. Sorry, but buying a shell of a machine and one that lacks a majority of the features of its past system is a letdown… Next time I will be sure to wait for the price drop which will happen in a year or two. At least then the system will finally be up to standards (hopefully), ill pay half the price for double the features…

            February 14, 2014 at 17:47

You’re acting as if you bought it on impulse after walking into a shop not knowing what to expect. Everything you could and couldn’t do on either console came up on Google anytime you searched “PlayStation” or “Xbox”. If you placed an order and expected a backwards compatible console with hundreds of games and more features (it still has a lot of features) then you’re very naive. And there are far more and better games available for the PS4 than there were for the PS3. And I don’t know why you’re making such a big deal of the lightbar.. It has more function than the 4 dots had on DS3. You just seem like someone pretending to have the PS4 and hate it to sway people to Xbox when in reality they’re in the exact same boat.

That is not true. Sony never stated that it would not be able to do the things the PS3 can do, i dont remember it saying it wouldnt have blutooth compatability right away and that most people’s earpieces wont work, I didnt know that it wouldnt be able to Bitstream HD audio for games, I didnt know it would not be able to stream music and videos from your computer, I didnt know that the camera, which they raved about, would be so incomplete and the magical voice recognition that they compare to the Kinect would be so poorly done or that it only works within a 6 ft range, I didnt know that the home menu would be so sloppy and unorganized or that you cant even change the background picture, I didnt know that in order to play your own music while gaming, that you have to join a $5 music subscription in order to do so and that you cant rip your own music to it either. I didnt know that the controller would have the life span of 6 hrs. I dont remember them saying that in order to use the Share feature, you HAVE to be a member of Facebook or other social media, I do recall them saying that there would be no wait for load times during gaming, well thats definitely false. I did know it wasnt backwards compatible, ill give you that one. I did read up a lot on it, i had it preordered for quite some time and I was very excited for it but, due to the reasons I have listed and many more I have not, its a compete letdown. And sorry, if you think that there are far more and better games available for the PS4 vs the PS3, I think your seriously just being a fanboy because that is extremely far from the truth. Its probably the #1 complaint right now, just google it and you will see article upon article about it.

And no, like I said, i dont like Xbox, I wont buy one and I am just very disappointed with the PS4.

            February 15, 2014 at 01:00

The majority of what you said I had read about beforehand —> http://m.uk.ign.com/articles/2013/10/31/stuff-you-wont-do-with-your-playstation-4 <— and that was everywhere for weeks before launch. Also, everyone that had tried the camera way before its release said it was subpar, so you should've listened to reviewers. But I wasn't expecting to navigate with my voice, just play motion controlled games like The Playroom. And of course the PS3 has better games, they've been developing games for the PS3 for 7 years. I'm just saying the PS4 launch titles were better than the PS3 launch titles. Launch titles are notoriously bad and for that I think the PS4 and XB1 really hit a home run in comparison with other generations. Also, I get about 8 hours of gaming out of my Dualshock 4, definitely more than 6 and I don't think it's healthy to be gaming for more than 8 hours straight on a regular basis for the battery life to be much of an issue. Especially as it charges them in standby. Why aren't you charging your controllers in standby? And another thing, why did you want to use the share button if you don't have a social media account? How did you think you'd be sharing it? And what to? :S

You're either an Xbox troll or an extremely naive "gamer" that expected far too much far too soon. The PlayStation 4 is a fantastic console, it won't replace my PS3 as my most frequently used console this year (maybe late next year) but I never expected it to. Consoles take time to become truly relavent and right now the PS4 and Xbox One aren't that relavent beyond their exclusive titles, but soon will be. Additionally, any price drop either console has in the next 2 years won't be very significant, demand is high and so is cost of production. They don't usually drop the price until a new model comes out (that's when the PS3 dropped below the £350 mark) and I'm pretty sure you'll be getting a lot of use out of your PS4 way before that.

Acutally, barely anything I mentioned is stated in that article. And great, maybe you are lucky to get 8 hrs out of the controller, still very poor compared to the PS3 controller. And I also never said i played for 6 hours straight.

In regards to social media, why does it have to be linked to this? How did I think it would be shared? Simple, I have a friend on the PSN, i upload a video to my PS4 and send it to him. Thats really so hard to think of and do? I dont think so.

Sorry, but you are clearly a fanboy for Playstation. I am not naive as they did not explain how incomplete the system would be and to not have the features the past system had is just poor production and an obvious rush to release the system vs. quality of release… Also, if you can really say that the PS3 will be your more frequently used system for 2014, this just shows how bad the PS4 really is…

Have to say, if you didn’t know all of those things before buying, then you obviously didn’t research the console, because all of those features were mentioned in every competent ps4 review.

Sounds to me like you acted like a little kid who had ntoo have the newest and best as soon as it came out, without even bothering to do research on it – and then had buyers remorse!

Don’t get be wrong, I agree with a lot of what you’ve said, but I knew what the console would and wouldn’t do before buying. The battery life annoys me, but I just charge it every night. At least the ps4 doesn’t have to be on to charge your console, and when it’s fully charged it stood charging. The XBone switches on when you charge the controller, and stays on, and continues charging the controller until you unplug it, which damage the battery, as continuing to charge a fully charged battery serially reduces battery life.

Well, I still havent seen any article that tells these things were not going to be included prior to preordering the PS4… Perhaps one or two of the main things, but not about all of the little features that the PS3 does and saying the PS4 wont…

I can’t find the review on IGN anymore because it’s been replaced, but before the ps4 came out, i definitely remember reading an IGN review that said you can’t stream from a pc or play audio cds. I know I did because i remember thinking that was an extra reason to keep my ps3. I can’t remember if it was before or after release that lack of Bluetooth support for headsets was mentioned though. Never read about HD audio to be fair…

Sony aren’t losing money to compete – Sony make about £30 per console and Microsoft make about £20 per console. Because of that, any price drop Microsoft perform, Sony can match it and still be making more money – unless Microsoft drop their price below cost, which is what Sony did with the ps3 – they actually lost money on every fat ps3.

I’m sorry but do you actually get paid for posting negative posts over and over? I’m just curious, is it a good living? You have 6 posts doing nothing but knocking a system that by all accounts is doing quite well for itself.

Lmao. But in all fairness . There’s still some good things coming to Xbox one. Both consoles are amazing and will only get better. I bought both . Because I know what’s on the horizon.
