8 Bit Awesome – Super Mario Crossover

1 min read

Imagine playing Super Mario Bros. and instead of the titular, moustachioed rotund, instead being link from the legend of Zelda. How cool would it be to be Megaman, shooting at goombas instead of jumping on them? Playing Mario using other 8 bit heroes? Sounds like the stuff of dreams!

Dream no more – because thanks to a bit of flash wizardry from Newgrounds user ExplodingRabbit, you can do just that!

Super Mario Crossover is a flash recreation of the entire original Super Mario Bros. – but one that melds your favourite 8 bit games together. you can play the game as Mario, but also one of 5 other NES champions – and they play exactly as you’d expect them to.

Simon Belmont, Link, Samus, Mega Man, and Bill from Contra make the glorious line-up, and each is granted a unique ability or upgrade by the fire flower. It’s really quite awesome. Says it’s creator :

This is my first game, and I have worked on it for over a year. It has been a long journey, but I think you will see that all of my effort has paid off. I have recreated the entire game of Super Mario Bros, but now you can play as different characters. Each character plays just like they do in their original games with a few modifications to make the experience better.

While not the first attempt at a crossover of this sort, it’s the most complete and cohesive. Being raised on a diet of NES and Nesquick, this might be my game of the year. Anyway, if you’re bored, be sure to give it a try.

Check it out, over at Newgrounds
