A video hands-on of the PlayStation 4

50 second read

No we haven’t hit the big time (yet!) and Sony hasn’t sent us a PlayStation 4 to show you. But it will happen… soon. Anyway,  what they did do was send T3 a PS4 in the UK and they have made this cool factual video about the console.

I’m really starting to like the look of the PlayStation 4 and they sound like they’ve done some incredible things with the new DualShock 4.The only 2 negatives I saw was the fingerprint magnet and then the ports on the back looked a little cheap. That’s not the way Sony normally does things so I’m hoping I’m entirely wrong on that front.

Also it’s coming with a stand so it can be positioned vertically, like the PS2. That doesn’t sound like a good idea to me, and I always prefer having my consoles oriented horizontally.

Hopefully the recharge cable will be longer than a foot this time.

I’m just glad the controller itself is bigger. It’s a win. The previous one was giving me carpal tunnel syndrome.
    Console looks cool too.
The weight displacement thing sounds cooler than it’s probably going to be practical.

Second that. I’ve been spending too much time with The Last of Us and I am constantly reminded why I love my X360 controller so much. Had to purchase triggers and concave thumbstick add-on’s for my PS3 controllers a few years back and they were an awesome investment.

Didn’t know those existed. Now I’m going to get me some too. I agree, compared to the Xbox controller (which I use on my pc), the PS one just feels a bit kiddy.

Not bad at all, like the slick design, 😉

Hmmm, I was about to rage at how this vid was just demoing the physical plastic parts…. then I realised, they can’t really demo anything else….

Uhmmmm what is the speaker on the controller for???? Please tell me it won’t make those terrible noises that the Wii made?!?!?!?!?

Well, there’s a number of things it ‘could’ be used for. The ones I’ve seen so far are mainly a demo of the technology. For example, with that Playroom game they’ve been showing (seen below):

From what I’ve seen and heard, the new rumble system allows for much more precise ‘rumble/feedback response’, take the playroom thing as an example. When the tiny robots are ‘inside’ the controller, you can tilt the controller to the left or right, and you’ll feel each individual ‘robot’ hit the side of the controller as they’re tossed back and forth. There’s also another demo (can’t find it), where it gives the impression that the controller is filled with water, and as you tilt it around, the rumble system gives you the distinct impression that it in fact has water inside of it. In this case, the speaker was used to give the sounds of water splashing/gurgling inside the controller.

They were also talking about how you can use the controller itself as a wheel, and that the rumble gives the impression of road response/feedback.

Haven’t really seen how it’ll be used in games (the mic), but I like the new rumble system. They could also tie the speaker into say, if your gun is empty, the speaker emits a clicking sound like there’s no ammo. That kinda thing.
