Assassin’s Creed IV worse on Xbox One?

It looks like Resolutiongate is set to continue. Rumours have started circulating that the Xbox One version of Ubisoft’s plundering pirate simulator Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag runs at a sub-1080p resolution as well, while its PlayStation 4 counterpart runs in full HD glory.

That’s according to Marcus Beer, otherwise know as the “Annoyed Gamer”who affirms that the Xbox One version of Assassin’s Creed’s return to form on the Xbox One “fuzzier” and “strained” compared to the PS4 versions which is “sharper”, “crisper”, and has “better draw distances”.

Funnily enough, when I spoke to Assassin’s creed IV’s game director, Ashraf Ismail off camera about which system to get the game for, he quite diplomatically said that he’ll be playing it on a PlayStation 4.

In the end though, it’s not resolutions that matter, but the game’s themselves. It does, however, sting a little that games on the more expensive system are running worse. that itself all sounds a little familiar.

It’s really starting to look like the Xbox One is the next generation’s PS3. The 32mb ESRAM that’s there to make up for the slower DDR3 is technically lightning fast stuff, but it’s taking developers quite some time to wrap their heads around how to use it – much like they did with the PS3’s notoriously tricky Cell processor.

It seems though, that Microsoft’s tools just weren’t quite mature enough for this launch period. I have no doubt, however, that second generation Xbox One games will run and look better once developers are more familiar with how the console works.

Was just watching that episode now while eating some coco-pops. He seems pretty pissed at the trolls and fanboys, shame lol but I too agree on both sides. Resolution doesn’t matter as much , it is the game that MAKES the game after all and if it’s fun as hell, who cares? But if you’re going to buy an X1, which is way more expensive, you kind of want the best , shiniest experience possible.

Is it really a Resolutiongate or more like Resolutioncatflap? Because it’s not exactly a gate-sized issue.

Wow so people who want the XBOX One is already waiting longer for the unknown release date, have to pay more for the console which is not as powerful as the PS4 and doesn’t even close to offering anything like PS+. Why are they doing this to themselves. XBOX only cares about Americans. Let them have it.

That was the 360. This is the new One. (See what I did there?). There are no reports of an RROD on it. Just a coffin and a tombstone. Proudly supplied by Sony.

Then again, there were no reports of the 360’s RRoD pre-launch either, at least, Microsoft managed to keep the information in-house until millions had sold.

I don’t mind the lack of pixels I do however mind if the frame rate is far less so will have to see which one performs the best.

Was hoping on getting both consoles but it seems for now that the ps4 is the way to go. I am hoping to one day justify buying a Xbox one as well… time will tell

“unless you really love counting pixels”

There really is a big difference between counting pixels, and expecting a natural progression of the standards of games from generation to generation. I am still struggling to understand where this apologists view of AAA games, is coming from.

We aren’t talking indy titles that don’t claim to be technical masterpieces. We’re talking big franchises, with huge budgets, that are failing to reach a standard that should be unquestionable on the hardware being used.

It seems to me that this isn’t an issue of PS4/Xbox One, but Activision, EA and Ubisofts inability to properly utilize the resources at their disposal. And I feel this is extremely concerning, because we’re making excuses for these companies, rather than questioning aloud their failings.

It feels like people view the past 7 years of developers struggling to hit the 1080p/60fps benchmark consistently, that it’s some kind of miracle milestone to achieve. This is incorrect, and really only encourages these companies to continue their string of mediocrity.

You say all that matters is the games, well, what has been added to these games, that make it so resource heavy that hitting 1080p/60fps is a struggle? Because, I’m not seeing it, especially given I have less and slower RAM, a 4-core CPU and a better GPU (which means I have data bottlenecks on my PC), and am running 1920×1200 @ 60fps in most games.

Given these facts, how can you justify the defense of these massive publishers/developers?

I’m not defending it at all; I just figure that the average joe won’t really care. As I said in the article, I think it’s fair to expect the more expensive machine to perform better – but that’s clearly not the case.

But if the guy wants an Xbox (and that’s his choice really) I don;t think he’ll notice the difference when it comes to actually playing games. As somebody, myself, who likes tech and shinier things, I’m getting a PS4 at launch..though I reckon this next gen i’ll be gaming predominantly on PC.

Again though, this is only about the PS4/One insofar as what they have internally, what they BOTH have. It’s not a comparison issue, it’s a failure of developers issue (in my opinion). Given the industry basically stood still for 7 years, with regards to reasonable expectations for minimum benchmarks for games I think people are simply missing the train on this, and not really questioning something that….really raises eyebrows.

Remember that the PS3 had a few 1080p/60fps games, right? The Xbox One and PS4, represent a meteoric leap in resources available. How is it possible that developers are missing a mark that even last gens hardware (in some cases), could hit?

I am concerned for BOTH machines, not just the Ps4 or the Xbox One. I’m concerned for games and gamer’s in general. We should expect that first party developers have the best handle on this hardware, of course.. But, we shouldn’t be expecting that that leads to only first party titles reaching the minimum of expectations.

I am bewildered, that these companies are struggling to reach this benchmark. I really am. And it has nothing to do with which platform it’s on. Simply the misuse of the resources available.

I am so confused Geoff, I cannot even begin to explain how this….of all things, is an issue for developers, and I strongly feel that people should care. Because missing 1080p/60fps across the board for AAA titles on Octocore, 8g of RAM, and mid-ish range GPU’s, seems utterly ludicrous..

I don’t fault the X1 either, as I said above, because there’s more than enough resources there for this to be a non-issue. I blame devs, and I’m beginning to blame gamer’s for the apathy as well, unless they speak up, developers will continue to deliver sub-par performance from games.

Why do journos always put the caveat like this article did in the last two para. It’s not anyway the same as PS3 vs 360. There it was hard to compare their respective power owing to some very powerful but esoteric tech on PS3. Here it’s quite clear X1 simply does not have the power of PS4 (easy to compare this time as they are both using more ‘off the shelf’ components). They have almost same spec CPU, X1 has lot less GPU and slower main memory. Does anyone think the 32MB ESRAM is going to account for that kind of deficiency.

Also there is no doubt X1 games will get better but so will PS4.
