If there is one thing that is monstrously difficult to pull off in this day and age, it’s keeping something a secret.

Keeping secrets, however, seems to be a skill that Ken Levine and his boys at Irrational Games are very, very good at. Three years after releasing the original Bioshock, they have smacked everyone out of the blue by announcing a prequel, titled Bioshock Infinite.

There is a rather great trailer after the jump, and it will bring you straight back to the day that you saw the first CG trailer for the first BioShock. For those of you that can’t stream video, I have taken a whole bunch of screengrabs for you to check out until you can see it in motion.

Trailer, images and more after the jump.

Bioshock Infinite takes place in 1912, before the first Bioshock happened, in the floating city of Columbia.

Joystiq has a whole preview of the game up on their site, which you can view right here. But now, sit back and watch the awesome CG trailer.

And for those of you who can’t watch the video, here are all the screengrabs that I took, just for you!

While some people might groan at the strange idea of a Bioshock prequel in the sky (it sounds funny just saying it), I think this is actually looking pretty interesting. The change of tone from dark to light may prove to be quite different as well.

With Bioshock set under the ocean, the “time of day” was a constant, as it was always dark-under-the-water o’clock, but with Bioshock Infinity, it will be interesting to see if they include day/night cycles into the mix as well.

Bioshock Infinite will be releasing on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2012.

So then, now that you have seen the goods, let us know what you think.
