Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 is breaking away from “left trigger, right trigger, dead” tactics

COD

If there’s something that I’ve been rather adamant about, it’s that every single game ever made is a series of actions that are repeated until done with. That explains FIFA, NASCAR, fighting games and of course, shooters. Call Of Duty usually gets the bulk of ire thrown towards it, with folks deriding the popcorn entertainment single-player and the linear progression towards the finish line. But this year, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 wants to shake things up.

Which Call Of Duty sort of did last year, with Advanced Warfare. Say what you like about the game, but throwing in enhanced movement controls made it feel a little bit new last year. But this year, developer Treyarch wants Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to not feel like an extended version of whack-a-mole, played with the controller triggers. That’s according to game director Dan Bunting, who explained to EDGE via GR that the game will first focus on subliminally moving through maps and escaping potential kill-zones:

We still push people into choke points and constrain heights, but we wanted to give players an extended mastery curve, to expand the upper limits of how they learn movement through the map. We automate a lot of things. We let players concentrate on the combat; everything else is fluid – it sublimates to a primal part of your brain.

Which means that this version of the game needs to break free of the usual trigger-happy actions, as campaign director Jason Blundell detailed the new nav-mesh AI which also works with the environment and has 20 different “mentalities”:

With the greatest reverence and respect for [Call of Duty], sometimes the tactic is just left trigger, right trigger, dead. With some of our new AI archetypes, that won’t be viable. We’ve also opened up the spaces, so you need much better situational awareness.

Sounds interesting. One problem that I’ve always had with Call of Duty games, is that I’ve never felt pressured enough to use my entire arsenal during a stage. It truly has been a case of pressing the right trigger at the right time. if Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3 can force players to not only think smarter but to use all the tools they have in order to save the day, I think the results could be familiar, yet fresh. After all, work with what you have.

Ubisoft knows no one likes Uplay, EA knows no one likes always online games and Blizzard knows people want WC4. Yet people still buy their games in the millions

I’m under the impression that the people over at EA think that if they make a decision the entire gaming market will shift.
Surprise. All I’m doing is shifting away from buying EA.

Of course most people will shift, they can’t live without their sequels.

There’s a reason ME3 was Origin-only while KoA, a new franchise launched at the same time, was on Origin and Steam.

No plans for sequel KoA as far as I know, so there will be no shifting needed 🙂

There’s a few that I don’t support and even more where I’ll only buy the GOTY edition of their games.

Why not streamline movement completely? Maybe something like Call of Duty: Black OpWolf…

That so much marketing BS I had to go fetch a roll of Twinsavers to get it off my screen.

They say every year is new COD is different and “more intelligent” and every time it is the same because if they make it more intelligent it will flop faster than an Evolve tournament at a Waterworld convention.

Wait until they reveal their trump card, even more advanced fish that swims out of the way when you approach.

They’re breaking away from the stereotypical Left trigger, Right Trigger, dead idea, and focusing more on the strategic game play model… In other words, it’ll now take you 16, instead of 15 minutes to finish the whole CoD campaign….

    Hahahhahahahaahahaha!

Are you guys really believing this? Every year they say the same thing, “our next game is going to be a vast improvement on our last game…. we’ve learnt so much from our community blah blah – blah blah… This year’s Call of Duty is going to be the best one yet… blah blah… we’re updating the controls and making it more intuitive… blah blah”

Darryn could have saved himself some time and just copy-and-paste last year’s press release.

It’s true. Just like how they’re listening to the customers regarding the new NFS.

If they do not have the Tesla with a supercharger to compliment the turbocharger I’m going very upset.

I’m thinking for the new NFS, the way EA functions, they say they’re “listening to the customers”.
          What this means:
They’ve somehow noticed that people want a new Underground game.
They will create a game with the word Underground in the name.
          What it also means:
It will probably be no different to the last 5 or more.
It will NOT be anything like the old Underground games.
It will still focus only on high-end cars, with no monetary system and it will have an online function that will be terrible and empty within two years.

“Next year will be even better…”

It must be fun working on the press releases for Call of Duty games. The amount of work you actually have to put in must be minuscule.

You have to give some points to the PR department for coming up with such bullshit.

“We automate a lot of things. We let players concentrate on the combat; everything else is fluid – it sublimates to a primal part of your brain.”

What does that even mean ??
