There’s no two ways about it: Dead Rising 3 looks gorgeous. Necrophiliac taste in visuals aside, the game also looks pretty damn challenging. And that’s something that the game will indeed be. If you choose to play it that way.
Speaking to OXM, producer Mike Jones said that “It’s probably the most difficult Dead Rising game we’ve ever made. We wanted to sort of have our cake and eat it, serve both kinds of gamers”.
I’m the kind of gamer who just wants to be chilled, who doesn’t want to be on a timer or a schedule, but a lot of Dead Rising fans love that timer, and love that save system, and they love breaking controllers, I guess – throwing them against the wall. So if you’re a masochist, we’re not going to ruin it for you.
All that extra challenge is present in Nightmare mode, which ups the ante with time mechanics if players decide to tackle it. Or you can take your time and steamroll over zombies at your own pace. “You can take it seriously, as a zombie survival outbreak simulator, or you can do this nonsense. We’re laying down a canvas, and we’re letting you paint up that canvas and make the game how you want to make it,” a Capcom rep said.
Personally, I dig that approach. I hated the time limit restriction in previous Dead Rising games, I’ll admit. Sure, it was novel but I didn’t enjoy it being forced on me. That, and I’m terrible at games in general, so yay for a softer setting.
