American sales tracking wizards NPD group have released their December figures – and surprise, surprise, Nintendo are still making a killing. while you’d expect everybody and his grandmother to already own Nintendo’s white waggle box, it appears that’s not the case – as it managed 3.81 million units, outselling the Playstation3, PSP, Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 combined.

The system that came the closest was Nintendo’s own handhelds, the DS family, with sales of 3.31 million.  Interesting to note was that the PS3 has displaced the Xbox 360 forcing it to third place, outselling Microsoft’s console by 50 000 units. Was this a December fluke, or is it a trend that’s going to continue?

With regards to software sales, it’s once again Nintendo who’s on top. New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the months biggest selling title, with 2.81 million red covers now in American homes. The silver and bronze medals also belong to Nintendo, with Wii Fit Plus (2,410,000) coming in 2nd, and Wii Sports Resort (1,790,000) nabbing the last place on the podium.

The 4th and 5th spots were the same game, but on different platforms. If you guessed Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2, give yourself a pat on the back. The Xbox 360 version outsold the PS3 SKU by 51 000 units, with the game selling a combined total of 2.75m units – still less than Mario’s latest outing. do you remember a few months ago, Reggie Fils-Aime said that NSMB Wii would be the holiday’s biggest selling game, outselling one of Modern Warfare 2’s SKU – well it outsold both, combined. The Wii’s success is quite nauseating. What if all we left wih in 10 years time is another Mario Bros.

I’m cool with another Super Mario Bros. It’s the Wii Fit’s/Music/Vitality Sensor that scares the pants off me.

I can’t wait to see what they do with the vitality sensor…so I can bitch about how goddamned stupid it is.

The trademarking of “Wii relax” scares me.

It’s weird I would have expected Sony to have made a big deal about beating the 360 in December… it seems like a big deal to me

Why would the PS3 beating the Xbox be a big deal? It would be like being a big deal when an able bodied runner (PS3) beats a crippled runner (Xbox). Hardly worth celebrating.
