Diablo Immortal’s character classes were chosen based on strong and unique identities

3 min read

Diablo Immortal is shaping up to be a chunky alternative to the usual demon-slaying action of its bigger brothers on PC and console. It may play out on a smaller screen, but mechanically it features a highlight reel of some of the most treasured classes that fans have played as over the year. From stalwart bruisers such as the Barbarian to new generation ass-kickers such as the Demon Slayer and Monk, Diablo Immortal has a healthy selection of classes to choose from.

So which characters made the cut for Blizzard? The devil-killers who brought a strong sense of identity to Diablo over the years, according to senior system designer Kristopher Zierhut. “The most important thing about classes is that they all have really strong and unique identities,” Zierhut explained.

They have abilities and playstyles that feel very different from each other, and when you’re playing as that class you feel like you’re that type of a character. So we talk about Barbarians leaping into combat in a battle rage and striking everything around them. Does it fit our game? Does it fit our world? Is it distinct from the other classes?

We talk about about the demon hunter being able to shoot while moving, the wizard using their magic to freeze and control monsters or blow them up with fire. Getting those important fantasies to feel right is the most important thing. As we looked at classes to add to the game, we’re looking at how strong a fantasy and an idea of being that character, can be provided.

If you haven’t kept up, here’s the current roster for Diablo Immortal:

A savage wanderer and mighty weapons expert.Survivors of the disaster that struck Mount Arreat, Barbarians use powerful weapons and brutal attacks to crush any opposition.

Skills: Hammer of the Ancients, Chained Spear, and Whirlwind

A rebellious academic and living conduit of arcane power.Wizards manipulate arcane forces to strike from a distance, disintegrating their enemies to oblivion, freezing them until their bodies shatter, or burning them into charred remains.

A swift, sacred warrior and a master of martial arts.Monks embody the will of their land, Ivgorod, and their one thousand and one gods. Lightning-fast strikes and peerless mobility are the Monk’s specialty, and they pummel their enemies with a dizzying array of blows.

Demon Hunter

A vengeful stalker and crossbow-wielding adept.Relentless vigilantes that assault from afar, Demon Hunters are trained slayers with a tragic past—their families destroyed by the denizens of the Burning Hells. Tempering the discipline of their training with their hatred for the Burning Hells, Demon Hunters strike undeterred until their prey is at their mercy.

Skills: Rain of Vengeance, Daring Swing, Knockback Shot

A towering colossus and wrathful zealot.Faith is a Crusader’s weapon. Striking with cruel flails and clad in impenetrable armor, Crusaders wander the land, vanquishing evil wherever they go and dominating the battlefield through sheer purpose.
