Divinity: Original Sin coming to consoles as Enhanced Edition

Divinity

Divinity: Original Sin was, despite what most publications (including this one) said, pretty much the best RPG released last year. A single and co-operative prequel to Divine Divinity, the partially Kickstarted game was massive hit with RPG fans. It wasn’t filled with mindless fetch-quests, had you collecting absolutely zero pointless shards and wasn’t, in the end, a chore. It also wasn’t released on consoles, which is probably why it didn’t quite get the wide recognition it rightfully deserved. That’s changing. It’s coming to consoles this year. And it’s bringing some extra love to the PC version with it.

This weekend, developer Larian studios and publisher Focus Home Interactive announced that the game would be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as an enhanced edition of the game.

“There was a lot of publisher interest for [the console version] but when Focus approached us, the decision was rapidly made,” says Larian;s Swen Vincke. “We know each other well, having worked together since 2002, and that means there’s a lot of mutual trust & respect.
Focus’ recent growth as well as the energy and enthusiasm showcased by their team makes me confident they’ll do a great job in publishing the Xbox One & PS4 versions of Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition.”

The Enhanced edition is more than just a simple port, bringing with it a wealth of changes and new features:

  • New intuitive user-interface tailored for controllers
  • Dynamic split-screen for co-op
  • Fully voiced and remastered dialogs with AAA-actors
  • Hours of new content; quests, combat-styles, location and changes to the crafting system.
  • Entirely new gameplay modes and character builds
  • A heavily rewritten story with a brand new ending
  • Massively reworked visuals and sound effects

What’s even better is that owners of the PC version of the game will get all of this extra love for free, as a separate game (and not through an update). Unfortunately, it does mean that saved games won’t be transferable.

Here’s a shiny trailer:

Enhanced Edition. Isn’t that just “pc version”?

It’s strange actually, when games get ported from PC they almost always turn out better on consoles. Like Diablo 3

I don’t want to talk about Diablo 3. Because I really want it. And so far it looks like I’m still going to get it on console instead. My wife has shown real interest in getting it, actually.

Couch co-op is the best! And it works really really well with the controller. If you buy one game for console I’d recommend that

Yea, think I’m going to opt for the console version on this one probably. Just don’t let Trevor read this.

But they’re boxes with no room for hardware customization. And they use controllers only. Surely that must upset you just a little.

They have an unappealing physical design aesthetic. ZING!

They did a really good job on the port, but I still prefer it on PC.

Diablo 3 and? Cause apart from D3 I can not think of a single console port that was better.

This game has been on my wishlist for too long. Now The Witcher 3 is almost out, so it’s probably going to be a Christmas buy. :/

I imagine co-op could be a crapload of fun with this game, because you can send your characters off in completely different directions in-game – so you can be in one section of the map while she’s on the complete opposite side of it doing something else.

Plus the main characters get into conversations about things & each one gets to decide how they feel about things, and if you need to make a decision & are in disagreement, it’s resolved with a game of rock, paper, scissors heh.

The thing that really intrigues me about this is how much it seems like the classic RPG. Something that’s gotten quite rare these days.

The best is the tactical turn-based combat that makes you use the environment to your advantage. Once you get to grips with that it’s so much fun to use & abuse, while praying the AI doesn’t use it against you.

Still need to finish the original, I got distracted. Will definitely be worth a replay though if they’ve changed it up so much.
