Empire’s 50 Greatest Game Characters of All Time

1 min read

Of All time! And Beyonce’s not one of them, thankfully. Empire have put together yet another list that will be unable to please everybody, this time focusing on the greatest video game character of all time.

I can’t say I personally agree with the list – particularly the character given its number one spot. They’ve awarded the accolade to Half-Life’s Gordon Freeman. While a fantastic character in an even better series of games, I’m not sure a silent protagonist – one where you, the player, essentially become the character – should nab top honours.

hit the jump for the top ten, and see if your favourite character’s made the grade.

10 Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)
9 Lemmings (Lemmings)
8 Master chief (Halo)
7 Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island)
6 Link (Legend of Zelda)
5 Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
4 Nameless One ( Planetscape : Torment)
3 Shodan (System Shock)
2 Mario (Super Mario Bros.)
1 Gordon Freeman (Half Life)

There are some obvious omissions from the list too. Where the hell is Leisure Suit Larry? The games have become godawful, but there’s no denying he belongs on the list. No Earthworm Jim? Crash Bandicoot? Resident Evil’s deliciously malevolent Albert Wesker didn’t make the grade either. Who else is missing?

This list just seems messed up. While it would be really difficult for anyone to put together a list that keeps everyone happy, this list just seems to miss out on too many greats in that top 10

My favourite is Pippa, a pure breed Mustang horse, born in the Pryor Mountains of Montana. I don’t think I need to mention which game that is from given it’s popularity in the horse riding adventure game series.
