Dota 2 gets Chinese New Year update

Chinese new year

Frostivus (aka Christmas) is barely behind us, but Chinese New Year is upon us. Dota 2 is celebrating it as New Bloom Festival. How does Dota 2 celebrate? With an update, of course!

New Bloom Festival brought us a special present on day 2 – Terrorblade, a new hero. No, it isn’t based on a horse like some conjectured (it’s the year of the horse in the Chinese calendar), but he sounds pretty impressive:

Terrorblade is the demon marauder—an outlaw hellion whom even other demons fear. He stole from the Demon Lords and for his crimes was taught this lesson: even Hell has a hell. He was incarcerated in Foulfell, a dark mirror of reality where demons are sentenced to gaze into twisted reflections of their own souls. But instead of suffering, Terrorblade mastered his reflected worst self and turned his terror loose upon creation.

But what would a new champion be without a new item? Allow me to present The Fractal Shard of Inner Abysm which grants custom upgrades to Terrorblade:

  • Several new animations
  • Altered voice
  • New base skin & model with special ambient effects
  • New Hero icon, portrait, loadout pose & minimap icon
  • New spell effects and icons
  • Socketed with a gem that tints the coloring of Terrorblade and all of his abilities
  • Custom death effect for Terrorblade’s victims

Also interesting is the new Random Ability Draft. Unlocked at level 11, each player is randomly assigned a hero and each hero’s abilities are placed in a pool. Players the take turns choosing which abilities their hero will have with bizarre examples such as a Pouncing Pudge or Axe fumbling with Psi Blades. That sounds absolutely bizarre, and yet could be hilarious and fun to watch/play.

Plenty of changes to heroes and items – be sure to check out all the updates to your favorites. Has your hero been nerfed or buffed in update 6.80?
