Blizzard are known for their quality products; If they announce a game, there’s a good chance it won’t hit shelves for at least a few decades. Imagine my shock this morning when I found out that their MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, has been given the go ahead, and it will be officially released in less than two months. I’ll give you a second to wipe that coffee off your screen. I’ll also tell you everything you need to know after the jump.
For those who haven’t read the news since… ever, let me bring you up to speed quickly. Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard’s take on the MOBA genre. It’s a 5 v 5 brawler that has a hero roster comprised of characters from other Blizzard titles; Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo, and even one of their very first games, The Lost Vikings.
What differentiates Heroes of the Storm from other MOBAs that its games are generally shorter in duration, a lot more frantic and faster in terms of action, and far more objective based. One of it’s best points however, in my opinion, is that it is incredibly beginner friendly – something that is practically unheard of in this genre.
Interested? Here’s the official trailer and announcement (via the HotS Blog):
It’s been a jam-packed year for Heroes of the Storm, and now it’s time to rally your fellow heroes and get ready for battle, because the portal to the Nexus is about to burst wide open! We’ve just announced that Blizzard’s worlds will collide when Heroes of the Storm officially launches on June 2, following an open beta testing period that begins on May 20.
I don’t really know what will differentiate the open beta from the launch to be honest. Perhaps there are some surprise heroes to be announced? Regardless, if you’ve been wanting to try out a MOBA, but didn’t know where to begin – this is it.
