FFD: What’s the best weapon in a videogame?

POWAAHHHH

Though the gaming landscape has changed considerably in the past decade, for a long time almost all games were about killing things. And when you need to kill things, you need to use weapons of some sort – even if those weapons are fists.

There are, of course, the iconic ones – like DOOM’ and Quake’s BFG, Kratos’ Blades of Chaos, Cloud’s giant big F***off Sword. There are things like Gordon’s Crowbar, Assassin’s hidden blades, and the chainsaw duct-taped to a gun in Gears of War’s Lancer.

Maybe you’re a fan of Halo’s pink mist, Mega-Man’s blaster or the Gauss guns from Syndicate. Maybe you’re a fan of Contra’s spread gun, Bayonetta’s hair or The Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda. There’s the Soul Reaver itself, and just about any weapon Insomniac Games has ever created.

And while not technically weapons, there’s the gravity gun from Half Life 2, and the associated Portal Gun.

What’s your favourite gun, sword, or weapon of another kind in a videogame? What makes it best? Me? I’ll always love Gears of War’s Gnasher shotgun. Rolling around like a lunatic and making everything around explode in to little bits in the first game’s multiplayer sends that  gun right to the top of the list.

What’s your uh…weapon of choice?

Thanks to Erwin the master Admiral bater Chief for today’s FFD. Sorta.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
