FFXIV: Realm Reborn PS4 trailer shows console specific features

3 min read

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is big business for Square Enix. It helped get the publisher back in the black financially, and is generally a well received and enjoyable MMORPG for Final Fantasy fans. Already available on PC and PS3, it’s now preparing to make the leap to PS4, bringing with it some new features.

For those who don’t/won’t watch videos (or maybe just this video, or maybe you just like reading what I see in the video like a strange Rorschach test), those features include:

  • Remote play on PS4 with Vita
  • Touchpad support
  • Social sharing through PS4 sharing interface
  • Mouse and Keyboard support

Mostly, the trailer just shows how pretty the MMO really is. I played it on PS3 and it was already pretty impressive – I can only imagine how much more beautiful it will be on PS4 (or, yes, PC). For those already playing it on PS3, you can even upgrade your subscription to PS4. Sounds like a plan to me!

You see, this is why I’m worried about all the MMOs flooding the market at the moment. FFXIV will appeal to Final Fantasy fans looking for more gameplay and open to MMOs, while The Elder Scrolls Online is geared towards fans of that franchise who are also looking for more gameplay and happy to play with other people. Then there’s still WoW, GW 2, the upcoming Wild Star… It’s nice to see variety on the market, but I just don’t know how many people there are to go around for all these games. WoW brought RPG fans of all types together back in the day – now people can play exactly what they’re looking for. I just don’t know if there will be enough players to meet expectations for that whole “massively” multiplayer experience.
