FireFly is coming back as a videogame

1 min read

If you’re even remotely fond of Sci fi, you’ve probably watched Joss Whedon’s firefly, a wonderful, Chinese-infused Western space drama. Here’s the good news; it’s coming back. Here’s the bad news: It’s coming back as a videogame. Wait! It gets worse.

It’s going to be a mobile, online game – and will be headed to iOS and Android devices, developed by QMXi and Spark Plug Games. No gameplay has been shown, but here’s a teaser.

Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi said of the announcement, “At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are.

“It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures — well, that’s just too shiny for words.”

Matt McMahon, VP of mobile for Fox Digital Entertainment thought it prudent to add that:

“We are thrilled to be partnering with QMx on Firefly Online.

“QMx has a long and successful history with Firefly and we couldn’t think of a better partner to make a truly innovative game that will stand up in the Verse and to its passionate fans.”

There’s also no mention of any Joss Whedon Involvement. Fans have been clamouring to have Firefly return…but not like this. Not Like this.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

Right where can I find a mind eraser. I want to forget what I have just read and keep firefly pure in my mind.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I was alright with it returning as a video game because it had potential. Then I read on mobile and now I’m not so thrilled anymore 🙁

    • Matewis Jubilai

“…not so thrilled anymore” ? You’re lucky. When I read that i realised there is no god, or if there is one he hates us/ uses a mac…

      • BacchusZA

Heh nah, there’s a G_D, & He loves us very much, and wants us to be happy. Just consider things like whiskey, coffee, the bunnychow., and boobs – there’s your proof. Especially the boobs.

I do, however, wonder about His sense of humour at times……

        • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

          Bunnychow, boobs, beer, biltong, braaivleis

  • Argentil

    Firefly is coming back…
    As a sci-fi game…
    For Android and iOS…

    • Sageville

LoL, yeah I was also there…

      FIREFLY – ZOMG!! Nerdgasm inc.

A Game – Mmmkay, still ok

      On Tablets – Wait, what?

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

        Felt the same

    • John Ambitious

I’ll just do with this one like I did with movies that had bad sequels, pretend they were never made
I will not mention what they were for the sake of my own safety

      • Kromas

Angry birds – Josh Whedon edition.

        • John Ambitious

Haha. That’s immediately what comes to mind when I hear for mobile…oh, it’s an angry bird type game

  • Hammersteyn

LOL I never saw the series, so whenever Firefly pops up I think about this.

    • Lord Chaos

      Burn the heretic. ;P

      • Hammersteyn

As long as this song plays while I’m burning I’m fine with it.

    • HvR

Have an upvote, best song (and band) ever to go see live.

      • Hammersteyn

        So very jealous 🙁

        • HvR

was about the same distance from the stage as this guy (more to the middle).Epic flames overhead, ear drums bleeding. AWESOME!!!!

      • Skyblue

I would have agreed with you before the Metallica concert. I loved Rammstein and their concert was the best I had ever attended in my life but I’ve never heard any band ever play as loud and as clear as Metallica did when I saw them at Soccer City.

    • Ultimo_Cleric N7

And whenever I hear this song I think of Vin Diesel in XXX. Which is NOT that great.

    • Skyblue

Respect for your taste in music but minus 5 million geek points for not having experienced Firefly and understanding why Nathan Fillion is epic!

  • Unavengedavo

I saw the Firefly Online and though it would be something like Eve online

    • 40 Insane Frogs

That would have been perfect, or even a game like PC classic, Freelancer. That would have been awesome!

      • Trevor Davies

I would be surprised if there isn’t a Firefly mod for Freelancer.

  • John Ambitious

Man I loved this series. Man oh man

  • 40 Insane Frogs

It’s been 10 years since Firefly was cancelled. 🙁 But, I’m glad that it’s coming back as a videogame. BROWN COATS ASSEMBLE!!!

    • 40 Insane Frogs

      Oh.. a mobile game… 🙁 f**k!

      • Hammersteyn

Deus Ex was the same. Heard about a new title. Mobile!

        • John Ambitious

          Wait what?

          • Hammersteyn
          • John Ambitious

            My face…(no I’m not a girl)

          • Hammersteyn

Yeah, the name John kinda insinuates it.

          • John Ambitious

Hey dude, you never know. Besides, the internet isn’t exactly the world wide honest web

          • Hammersteyn

          • Gareth L

Like a leaf in the wind.

          • John Ambitious

            Man that shit is deep

    • John Ambitious

      Ten years already!? Wow

  • Lourens Jordaan

I’ve never had such good and bad news at the same time.

    • John Ambitious

      I know that feel

  • Theo Steenekamp

YES!! I can download this… and feel the joy of deleting it. Just bring back the damn series. Nothing will compare to it:(
