Flamebait Friday Debate: RAGE 2010 Expo – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

It’s Friday 1st and it’s also October, which means two things: A Flamebait Friday Debate and the rAge 2010 gaming expo.

Today’s debate is all about South Africa’s only gaming expo, held at the Dome in Johannesburg at this time every year. How does everyone feel about the rAge expo? Are you going or are you giving this year a skip? What about location? How many of you have still missed out on the expo merely because you weren’t able to make the trip.

The rAge expo was created to promote gaming in South Africa and to allow local companies to show off their wares and generate interest as well as host a giant porn trade gathering LAN. At the same time I have heard multiple complaints from our readers about the lack of any sort of sales or discounts from retailers with exhibitor stands.

This is your chance to get it all off your chest. Tell us why you love/hate rAge and whether or not you will or will not be attending and why.

  1. Its true I never really buy anything at rAge because you always get better specials online or at another time. Core gamers don’t really buy at rAge.

People aren’t impressed but like it or not its growing the local gaming industry and thats never a bad thing. :ninja:

I’m in favour of what rAge represents, and how important it is to local gaming, however, I’ve never been to one, because it’s too far from where I live…

(although if you really think about it, that’s hardly an excuse because a plane ticket to Jozzie from Cape Town is now just about the price of two games and a coke).

Ive been to it twice, and honestly been disappointed both times. As said in the article, unless your one of the guys playing in the LAN, theres very little reason to go other than maybe seeing a bit of the new tech, but again nothing you cant already see online, or in-store in a few weeks.

I can’t agree. I don’t go to the lan anymore but still enjoy it. Its our own local version of E3!

Competitions at rAge are great fun, loads of give aways!

How about they rotate the event each year. One year Cape and then Jozi then Durbs.

Not really a fan of ol Tony Hawks, so not much interest there for me. And as I said about future tech, Kinetic will be instore in the next few weeks.

Only good things at rAge for me will be the preview of Fable III, and possibly the introductions and up coming news of XBL SA.
But to me the lack of sales and so on dont make it worth spending the R300 for a ticket to basically walk around a big gaming store  . This of course, is just my personal view.

I am going through this year after Uncle convinced me (Ok, it didn’t take much). I skipped last year and didn’t regret it, but I am looking forward to going through. The so called sales are never that great, but I seem to always land up buying something, makes me feel the trip is worth it.

Also, it is a great place to meet all the forumites, and fellow gamers. I am looking forward to seeing Kinect in action. Should be fun and it is also great for the community and gaming in the country. Hopefully it keeps getting bigger and bigger and things get cheaper and cheaper (I can wish right?)

There will be a F1 2010 4 player stage on the nu metro stand where you can race each other using racing seats and wheels

@ LordKhaan R300?!?!?! Where are you getting your tickets from? Day passes are R50 and yes there are alot of stores inside, there are also tons of stage demos, playable demos and cool things to see.

I would go , but it is a bit pricey if you ask me. A second hand game would serve me better.

Not arguing or knocking it, but as previously said, I would really only go for LAN hence the R300 price tag. I dont see the point in the day passes cause Im still of the view that its nothing you wont see in a few weeks, or already in store. I do like the idea of it, I just wish they would do more with it, eg discounts, special offers etc. I have supported it in the past and likely will again. Just not this year.

It is very seldom I go to Rage and come back with the WOW factor been satisfied. But none the less, I will be there again this year hoping for something great.

Going for the first time this year. Would have gone today but have to actually work. Will spend a few hours tomorrow there.

How long are the lines usually to get in?

I went today, been every year for the last 3 years and this year was definitely my favourite. I bought myself a shiny new XBOX 250 GB S for R2699 from Look and Listen, pretty sweet deal. As i suspected Kinect is a load of sh1t really gimmicky and designed for young kids. I was however really impressed with Move, played some table tennis and it was truly great

    the gt5 stand was pathetic!!!
they were running gt5 on 480i in 3d wtfrack!!! how stupid are those sony people!

rage really knows how to make games look bad!
except halo reach for some reason!

the gt 5 stands took long time to set up and the 3d was not even switched on i had to tell them that. What terrible promotion of my favorite game, they even made need for speed pursuit look bad!!!

f12010 was very well organized by the way

I ln my way there right now, I must say I was really impressed with the XBOX stand last year, for Forza they even had R8 as part of their exibit. But everything else was rather tame not what I had expected at all then again it is better than nothing.

    I went to a gaming expo and all i got was this R600 shorts I bought…no, really…

the only photos I snapped was with the booth girls..and no, I dont want to know their ages…but there were some fine honeys!

i agree about the core gamers not actually buying anything at Rage…all the games prices are not special!these days I realize these exhibitions are more about exclusivity than cheapness…the deals were more on the hardware side of things.

My MSI U160 netbook which i bought 2 months ago for R4700(which was the cheapest in town at he time)…went for R3300, its insane, I almost threw up!

besides that, I wasn’t very impressed, even after I tried the kinect…just to many folks there on saturday!jeez, and mostly snot nosed kids taking up all the exibits.

I have never been there, and it was OK..a solid 5 out of 10. highlights being the booth girls and the Megarom stand…thats IT!

    Nick how was you experience?

…btw who the F*** would want to buy a “Weekend Pass”??
